Meet Janifer Unique | Makeup Artist & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Janifer Unique and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janifer, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking to me is one of the many things that set us apart from each other. In this world of infinite possibilities and outcomes, fear is what keeps us straddling on the safe side. I’ve grown fond of risk, because despite the outcome..I was able to say I put my best foot forward with good intent. I take a risk everyday I choose to purse my dream of becoming the Entrepreneur that will end generational poverty for my family and provide a sense of inspiration to the African American community. I don’t believe you can live out your passions and desires without taking a risk. Besides, on the other side of a risk is often your wildest wish fulfillment waiting to come to fruition.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As odd as it may sound, I genuinely never would have imagined myself shining so bright in this artistic lime light. My makeup artistry started in 2017 as a hobby or an outlet for me but soon manifested into a passion I couldn’t stay away from. So here I am, one year into community college no plan, just a young women with a passion. In 2018 I decided to officially pursue my career as a Makeup Artist with my brand ‘Simply Unqiue Beats’. I started by offering my services to my close friends for as low as $25 but, without constant bookings I still needed more practice. I came up with the bright idea to start a raffle for free makeup sessions to gain experience and exposure amongst my peers. This risk sparked the flame for my career, I began getting booked for photo shoots and freelance gigs all over the DFW. I worked as a freelancer for eight months before landing a position with a high end makeup company. This felt like the biggest break for my business and myself as a learning makeup artist in the industry. Simply Unique Beats was on fire but like most flames, they go out. March 2019 came at me like a wrecking ball. With COVID being the highlight of media, my bookings started slowing down and my job eventually closed down. I felt a great sense of discouragement, shame and anger. For months I felt out of place , feeling like I lost my connection to the world. Feeling unworthy of so many things because I couldn’t provide for myself or my loved ones in the way I had been previous to the pandemic. One of my biggest hardships was overcoming that lack mentality that kept me feeling discouraged and ashamed. This wasn’t the first hardship and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I want my brand and my story the inspire others to continue pursues their dreams despite the inevitable events of this journey we call ‘Life’.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where do I start! I’m a foodie, so with that being said we’re hitting the top food spots in the city. Starting with my favorite Brazilian steak house, “Texas De Brazil”. They offer some of the best cuts of steaks! Next we would have to make a stop at my favorite brunch spot , “ The Social House”. Offering my favorite Mimosa flight, this place is a must-go.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to send a very heartfelt shoutout to my family. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by so much love and light, It goes such a long way to be supported by your loved ones. My believers. They invested and believed in my dreams before I could even put them into words. For that I owe you guys my all.
