We had the good fortune of connecting with Janette Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janette, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
We were both coming out of bad relationships and I moved in with her. We soon realized that we both like to cook and both dreamed of opening our own restaurant one day. We woulld cook together and saw that we both liked to use fresh ingredients. After looking into going into business with the help of family and friends we realized again that we could start our own business together. We put our heads together and went over recipes. Together is where our journey began. Two females that come from different backgrounds meshed into one taste. Jessica came up with the name JesCrave and we both used our recipes we once knew that came from grandma’s to everywhere we either worked or in my case lived with. People just crave food so why not twist it a little to Jess Crave and combined it into one hence JesCrave was born 2015.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
No it wasn’t then nor now is it easy. I became a mom at a young age and what I learned was that no matter what, you can’t quit! Quitting was never an option. God was always in my head and I knew I couldn’t stop living. I always felt like I was the underdog in so many situations. I always felt like I wasn’t heard by people. So I then began to treat others like I wanted to be treated. I would work hard till I would be noticed. Then one day a higher up gave me a shot and from there I knew or had of sense of that feeling that anybody could be in my shoes. You didn’t have to be rich to step up the ladder. Then as an asst Mgr I began to talk to people with kindness and respect instead of at people. Making them feel seen or heard makes them work hard for you. I began to notice and hear how people enjoyed working for me and with me. I believe being a leader you have to get your hands just as dirty as the people working for you. I’ve been taught that the mist anyone can say is no. I’m no stranger to rejection, but when I’m told no. I work on myself or whatever needs to be fixed till I get a yes. I’ve moved around so much that I believe this has always been my path. To meet so many different people with different backgrounds and cultures. We all share one thing though and that’s to eat good food. JesCrave comes from talking over good food. Getting to know everybodys story is just such a good conversation starter!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I love showing off our stockyards! I love Ricky’s BBQ. Downtown Fort Worth is another place. Sundance square. 7th for clubbing if you like that kind of stuff. We’d probably hang out at Poop deck cause they have karaoke. TCU area is fun. Especially Buffalo bros! Have a few drinks at Panther Pavillion or Cowtown Brewing!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give my shot out to my abuela (Wella) Sira Montez for the tamale recipe. Her pork tamales were really popular.. My other shout out goes to the people I’ve lived with over the years. Dolores (Lola) Carranza. She taught me the Puerto Rican aspect of food. The arroz con gandules or habichuelas! Gosh I remember I couldn’t get enough. Stafford Briganza for the India food. The curries and spices were out of this world! Then the Cooking shows on PBS. Yan can cook! Loved watching his show. I’ve always enjoyed cooking and seeing what flavors I could come up with. Shout out to so many people over the years I’ve forgotten some names. But they’re the reason I know so much!
