We had the good fortune of connecting with Janet Marsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janet, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to retire from the Postal Service as soon as I became eligible. Having custody of my 3 grandchildren, who were all still in school, I needed to supplement my income, hence the birth of Snow Cone City. It was something fun I could do with my grandchildren, while creating a legacy to leave behind for them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Snow Cone City is a shaved ice shop located in Mesquite, Texas. We office a variety of flavors along with other snack items. We are “Self Serve” meaning you, the customer, get to select your flavors and apply it to the shaved ice yourself. You can mix it up however you like. This sets us apart from the shop where they apply the flavor and limit the number of flavors available for the same price. I am proud of the fact that I was able to complete the vision that started with me and my late husband, Clarence Marsh. I know he would be very proud of me as well. Equipped with the knowledge I gained in the three cohorts I completed, I stepped out on faith and made it happen. I made many mistakes along the way, learning from each of them. I suppose the biggest lesson is not to beat myself up too much when I make a mistake and always keep God first. I would say to the world, if you have a passion, go for it! Pray about It! Let God Guide You!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This question hits home for me, because it actually happened! My best friend from high school, Mary Gethers, came to visit for my 60th birthday. We went to the AT&T Stadium because she is a big Cowboys Fan. The tour was amazing. We also visited the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, which was a bit disappointing. We ate a seafood boil, which was delicious! We spent the most time preparing for my birthday party, which was held at Hampton Inn & Suites in Mesquite, Texas. It was spectacular.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely!! My mentor, Donna Henry, played a large part in most of the resources I had access to. Because of her, I was connected with the three Cohorts I participated in. She has given me much guidance throughout my entrepreneurship journey. Bishop Omar School Of Entrepreneurship (BOSOE), where I completed my third Cohort, ended up being the best of the three. Not minimizing the knowledge I gained from the first two, BOSOE took me to a different level. They dug just a bit deeper than the first two and made it all make sense. Even after completing the program, they still give support and encouragement. Jasmine Howard and Antong Lucky have continuously followed my success and gives support even today.
