We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamilah ‘Milah’ Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamilah ‘Milah’, how to know whether to keep going or give up?
I don’t know how to give up but I know how to let go of things that no longer serve me.Before Covid, I had an award winning dance studio, Milah’s School of Dance, and I was financially stable as a small business owner. When my studio was forced to close, I had to let go of everything. I watched all the years it took me to get to where I was unravel. I should have gave up but instead I learned to let go and open myself to new opportunities. Now, I’m a freelance dance coach and choreographer. I teach classes at dance studios and conventions. Also, I provide private lessons to the serious or pre-
professional dancer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The way I got to where I am today was by overcoming many challenges and shut doors that made me feel as though I can’t do it, I’m not good enough, and I’ll never win. Now that the world is going through challenges due to the pandemic, I’ve never felt the pressure of giving up as much as I do now. Even though I lost my studio building, I have to keep reminding myself that I am the professional that trained, mentored, and inspired dancers that received top awards, scholarships and recognitions locally and internationally. I have learned and want the world to know that material status doesn’tdetermine the type of business you are but what does play a large part is the quality of the products that you put out into the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places to visit are Korea town in Carrollton, Stone Briar Mall in Frisco, and King Spa in Dallas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my parents who supports me through all my artistic endeavors. My students and parents who supported me when I had a studio and those who currently support me through private lessons. My childhood dance teacher Miss Sissy “Renee” who is the reason I became the teacher I am today. All my dance teachers who molded me into the dancer I have become. God, who woke me up everyday and blessed me with many talents I can share with others.
