We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Kimberling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor in our success is hands down our community. We are all inclusive in every sense of the word: we have all ages, ranging from 16 to 82. We have men and women, we represent many different races and abilities. We absolutely love that our modality is low impact because that means we can meet you where you are in your journey. We like to say: we are humble, we are kind, we leave no rower behind. We have a strong and welcoming community of members: and that is success for us.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Building our business has not been easy, but it has always brought us joy because of what we get to do every day. Fitness is full of emotion: people walk through our doors from lots of different points of view on their feelings about working out. Some are very excited to be there, to push themselves and set new goals for what they want to achieve. Others are coming back from an injury or perhaps a surgery- so there are natural trepidations on how the work out will feel. We have lots of members that were previously very active but have not been in many years, so their anxiety about starting a new routine is palpable. The beautiful thing about different people we serve is that: we serve them all. Forming relationships with all of our people are what drives myself, my coaches, my staff every single day. I often remind them that if you dont do anything else: make someone’s day better. Sometimes the 45 minutes that someone comes to class will truly be the only 45 minutes they get to care for themselves that day. What a true honor and blessing that is!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question because as a small business owner, some of the most incredible and life giving relationships I have formed are through other business owners locally! Just because we are a suburb doesnt mean we are boring! We have amazing spots here in Flower Mound and the smaller towns that surround us. I’d start by having drinks at Clink, a woman owned wine bar down at Lakeside. Then we’d head a few doors down over to Mio Nonno, which serves amazing Italian dishes and has a beautiful ambiance. Often times in the summer, Lakeside hosts a concert series in which local artists perform on their grassy lawn which is right outside of Mio Nonno. Live music, great food and friends: what more can you ask for?
I always like to begin my days with moving my body in some sort of fashion. Just because I own a rowing studio doesnt mean I dont sample all kinds of modalities! A hot yoga class at Yoga 6 or a good burn over at Pure Barre would be a fantastic morning. We’d then head over to Woodhouse Day Spa for some relaxation and wonderful massages and facials. Whether it be a fresh set of lashes or a perfect spray tan for an event, Ava Jade Esthetics always gets me glammed up and ready to hit the town again! A local favorite with great food and atmosphere is Marty B’s BBQ. We always bring our friends and family there to try the barbeque and experience live music as well. Our kids love to finish off dinner with s’mores in the fire pit outside!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out my husband, Ryan! Ryan and I co-own our studio together. People often joke they could never work with their spouse, let alone own a business. While it brings challenges, we each bring unique skillsets to the table.
In 2016, I had just had our first child. I was struggling both mentally and physically: I was overweight, pre-diabetic, on high blood pressure medicine and mentally in a dark place. I knew I needed to make some massive health changes in order to be the healthiest version of myself. Ryan encouraged me and supported me as I researched and experimented what worked for my body in regards to eating and working out. I leaned fully into overhauling my diet and over time, my body transformed. I went from being sick and on 3 different medications to losing 90lbs, getting off of all my medications, reversing my pre-diabetic diagnosis, and reversing my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) Without this critical period in our life; I believe we never would have opened Row House. I had this new found passion to help others transform their life through health and fitness.
