We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Berger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
There is no safe lane, in owning a business. If you are not willing to “gamble”, then there is no way of ever knowing how far you can go. The flower shop was a huge gamble, we really knew nothing about 1, owning a flower shop, or 2, owning a retail storefront. All I did know, is we could figure it out!
There is also the element of risk and reward while staffing your business. The success of Flower Factory of Texas, equally rides the shoulders of all of our staff. I have had great employees, and I have employees, who were just going through the motions. It is truly powerful when your whole team is willing taking a risk with you, and make magic.
The largest risks, my husband, Dennis, and I have taken, is Real Estate. It has by far been our largest reward as well. It is fun to look at the evolution of property hop scotch we played in order to get us to Hi-Berger Ranch. In fact, we recently added another 4.5 acres to the 100 acre ranch.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I can’t start this without quoting my mom, “you know nothing about flowers”. It makes me laugh, because she was right. But I have always known I was an artist, just did not know what MY medium was. In this day and age, there are so many resources at the tip of your fingers, I educated myself on basics, tools, and tricks from YouTube videos. Once I secured the knowledge of rudimentary engineering, I was able to show my art and vision in the design itself. I found my palette.
Watching the work of great floral artist before me, has been truly inspirational. But I have always felt the need to share my own style.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so understanding what the client’s vision is, and translating that to parallel with my work, is one of the most satisfying tasks to being a florist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dennis and I are foodies….and love a good Margarita! My favorite date night restaurant is Fearings, located in The Ritz, downtown Dallas. Weekend getaway, Las Colinas Resort, also owned by the Ritz. They put on a great summer staycation, for the whole family, with fabulous pool cabanas, restaraunts and Ritas!
Keeping it local, we have been spending more time in Ennis, which is now home. The downtown is charming and our favorite local eatery is Fern in the Wild.
I am looking forward to The Flower Factory’s Flower Power Happy Hour Brunch’s to add to this list! We want Hi-Berger Ranch to be the newest place to rustle up fun, memories and great gastronomy. Who doesn’t want to grab their favorite people and share fresh air, flowers and endless laughs?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
