Meet Jake Sonnevelt | Fishing Guide Barefoot Guide Service

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Sonnevelt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been on the water fishing my whole life. I decided to pursue being a fishing guide because it gives me the chance to show others the adventure that I have been so fortunate to be able to enjoy. There is simply nothing better than watching somebody be excited about that first catch, it does not matter if that first catch happens at 3 years old or 85. It is a moment of their life they will cherish forever.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a fishing guide in the Dfw metroplex. I chase several different species of fish from white bass, crappie, and hybrid-striper. What sets me apart from anybody else in the area is the fact that I will fish 1 species on 1 lake one day and switch gears entirely and change locations and species. Many in our area are dedicated to 1 lake and 1 species of fish. I strive to be the guy who can do it all anywhere. Getting to where I am today takes alot of long days and sacrafices. I take a lot of pride in what I do and know where I want to go and want to take everybody in my circle along with me. Keeping a focus on that vision is what helps make it through the hard days.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost we would make a stop for some BBQ at Hutchins. Then make sure the truck and boat have plenty of fuel and make a 5 day journey around to different lakes every day. A stop by Lake Texoma for some drag pulling striper would be in order. A stop by legendary Lake Fork for some crappie action in the timber. A stop by Lake Twakoni for some giant Blue Cat action. And finally would probably end our trip in Freeport Texas in the salt water catching redfish. Even on the days off from fishing clients I want to be out there getting in on the action for myself.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost my wife Kelsey is the one who believes in my vision and ensures that I keep going when it seems difficult. We do not give up in our house and sometimes just have to put our heads down and see if through. My 3 year olddaughter Tatum has also been on the boat with me since she was 2 weeks old and now asks to go every single day. I also have to give a shout out to any of the old timers, some who are no longer with us. If they did not take the time to show me a few of their tricks I would not be where I am today. Those tricks might be old but they still work!
