We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Mayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
A lot of the pop culture references to nutrition are overwhelmingly false! Which causes a huge problem when fitness and nutrition professionals try to help people with related goals only to face a lot of push back because they’ve been told their entire lives something like carbs are bad for you. THEY ARE NOT!

No food is inherently bad for you. Improper portions and lack of moderation is the real problem for most people.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started Jakes Coaching, a fitness and nutrition coaching business in February of 2022. I offer remote fitness/nutrition coaching and also personal training. So I work with clients from all over the world. My clients are in California, Texas, Illinois, the United Kingdom, and more! I have been coaching for over 5 years, but took the risk to go out on my own after a little bit of wise advice from a client of mine named Greg. He told me “Whether you fail or succeed its the person looking back at you in the mirrors fault.” After hearing him say that I knew I could live with failure if it was everything I had to give.

I offer eating and training strategies that are not only research based, but they are life based as well. I help you eat and workout based on your current life! Eat what you want, but I will teach you how to do it correctly. I am so confident in what I do that if you don’t see results with my coaching I offer a 100% money back guarantee!

Even with offers like that starting and building a business is hard. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying! At the end of the day there are a lot of challenges that go into running a business, but the hardest part is reminding yourself everyday that everyone goes through hard times and you are not alone. Enduring the hard times is what makes the good times so amazing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could do anything I would absolutely want to take someone to see some of the Dallas Cowboys facilities! Whether it is a game at AT&T or if we can go see the star practice facility in Frisco I think those are both very cool experiences a lot of other cities don’t have. Then from there they have to do some 2 stepping at Red River in Dallas. No body has a bad time 2 stepping and line dancing. For dinner you have to hit Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum for some amazing barbecue!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a couple people that helped me get to where I am now! My wife Ashley has been there for me more times than I can count. Always reassuring me that I could grow my business and be successful at something I truly love. Professionally Sara Schroeder of Sara Schroeder coaching and Greg Johnson of Verus Commercial Realty have been instrumental in helping me build a real official business from answering all my questions, to letting me know everyone feels like they suck sometimes but the difference between people who fail and people who succeed is not quitting! I couldn’t have built a business without these people.
