We had the good fortune of connecting with Jade Alex and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jade, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic career because I’ve never known anything different. From the time I could talk and write, I was creating. I’ve always been such a creative soul. I was always singing and dancing and drawing and writing ever since I could remember. I’ve always known I was born to create.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart and what sets every concert photographer I know apart from each other is that we seem to all have our own styles. I can identify photographer’s photos just from looking at the photo. Not one photo is ever really the same. Getting to where I am was certainly not easy. I grew up in a town in Louisiana where concerts weren’t really a huge thing, so when I was old enough, I began traveling to the Dallas area, photographing every show I could and eventually, I was able to move to the Dallas area.
Although I do have some struggles such as an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses, I try my best to accept the struggles while also embracing the wonders of this disability. While it does make it hard to stand loud noises and bright lights and crowded areas, it makes me extremely creative and resilient. I would not be who I am as an artist or a person in general if I was not Autistic.
I’ve unfortunately learned that not everyone is going to like you or your work; you cannot please everyone and i think I’m still working on accepting that.
But I’ve also definitely met some incredible people and some absolute life long friends.
I think I’d like the world to know that you don’t have to be cookie cut and have a “normal” job or a normal life. You can do whatever you want in life, no matter what anyone says. I fought against so many odds that were stacked against me and I continue to do so, but I’ve done it and I’d choose this life every single day over any other one.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend were visiting, I’d most definitely, of course, take them to a concert. I’d also probably take them to a local show as well. I’d take them to Deep Ellum, of course, and we could stop by Select Start Arcade and Bar and then also stop by Shot Topic, the Hot Topic, Emo themed bar, both located in Deep Ellum.
There is also an insanely wonderful Indian spot in Denton called Sangham Indian Restaurant that I recommended to everyone.
I know all the best thrift locations in the DFW such as Texas Thrift and Thrift World.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my Aunt Marilyn who bought me my first real camera, when I was 16 years old. I’d also like to shoutout the band Ded who gave me my first photo pass ever and have always treated me with kindness and respect throughout the years.
