We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivon Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ivon, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
One of the most important lessons my career has taught me is the critical role of balance and self-care. As a mental health therapist, my work revolves around supporting others, often through incredibly challenging moments in their lives. It’s easy to get caught up in the desire to excel, to go above and beyond for clients, and to dedicate long hours to ensure everything is done to the highest standard. However, I’ve learned that this approach, while well-intentioned, can quickly lead to burnout if I don’t prioritize my own well-being. This is a lesson I’ve not only experienced personally but also observed in many of the individuals I’ve worked with who struggle to balance professional aspirations with personal needs.
What no one really tells you, especially early in your career, is how to incorporate self-care into your life without feeling guilty. Many of us grow up believing that the harder we work, the better we’ll do, but this perspective often leaves little room for rest. I’ve come to understand that self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. When I take time to recharge—whether through exercise, hiking, spending time with loved ones or traveling—I return to my work more focused, present, capable and even more motivated. This balance allows me to meet the needs of my clients and manage the administrative demands of running Fuego Therapy Counseling Services with greater clarity and energy.
As someone who works with individuals experiencing immense stress and trauma, including immigrants and adult children of immigrant families, I’ve seen how cultural values can sometimes add to the pressure to overwork. Many of my clients, especially those from traditional Hispanic households, have shared how they feel compelled to constantly “do more” to prove themselves, often at the expense of their health. It’s something I relate to deeply, and it’s reinforced the importance of practicing what I preach by modeling healthy boundaries and self-care. Resting is not neglecting responsibility; it’s ensuring that we’re equipped to handle life’s challenges effectively.
Ultimately, self-care has taught me how to work smarter, not harder. When I prioritize my needs, I’m not only better prepared to support my clients but also more present in my personal life. This balance has allowed me to embrace the joy and satisfaction of my work without losing myself in it. My hope is to continue spreading this message—not just through my professional work but also by fostering a supportive culture within my practice and community. By taking care of ourselves, we can show up more fully in all areas of life.
What should our readers know about your business?
Fuego Therapy Counseling Services PLLC was founded with a vision to be a place where the community feels safe and supported in accessing the resources they need. We understand that seeking therapy can feel intimidating, especially for individuals navigating cultural stigmas or unfamiliar systems. That’s why our mission is to create an environment that is welcoming and accessible, offering compassionate care to all individuals ready to begin their journey toward healing and growth. Specializing in serving immigrants, children of immigrants, and those navigating intergenerational challenges, we strive to meet clients where they are—both emotionally and culturally.
What excites me most is the opportunity to grow this practice into a resource that connects with everyone seeking therapy, whether they are taking their first steps or continuing a well-established journey. Expanding Fuego Therapy Counseling Services to reach more individuals and provide tailored care, both in-person and virtually, is a priority. From individual therapy to immigration evaluations and maternal mental health services, we aim to meet the diverse needs of our community. My goal is to build a practice that evolves alongside our clients, ensuring that we are available to them in the way they need—whether through virtual sessions, in-office appointments, or a combination of both.
Making the decision to start Fuego Therapy Counseling Services was easy—it was a natural next step in my journey as a mental health provider. However, challenges arose along the way, particularly in deciding the structure of the practice. Should it be exclusively virtual, brick-and-mortar, or a hybrid? Navigating these decisions took careful consideration, but ultimately, I chose to prioritize flexibility. I want clients to feel empowered to access care in the way that best fits their lives. This commitment extends not only to my therapeutic services but also to my current and future employees. Creating a work environment that supports both providers and clients in meaningful ways is an essential part of my vision.
At its core, Fuego Therapy Counseling Services is about connection and empowerment. We are here to support individuals as they uncover their strengths, heal from challenges, and move toward the lives they envision for themselves. I want the world to know that this is a space where everyone is welcome, and where seeking help is celebrated as an act of courage and self-love. As we continue to grow, our commitment remains the same: to be a resource, a support system, and a place where the community can find the care they deserve. We don’t just help clients work through challenges—we celebrate their strengths and the fire within them that drives their growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the DFW area for a week, I’d plan an itinerary full of culture, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences. We’d start with a visit to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center, exploring world-class art and sculpture exhibits. For lunch, we’d enjoy the bold and authentic flavors of Meso Maya, and then take a stroll through Klyde Warren Park to relax and soak up the vibrant city atmosphere. Dinner that night would be at Omi Korean BBQ, where we’d enjoy grilling our own meats and indulging in a lively dining experience.
Another day would include a visit to the Dallas World Aquarium, where we’d marvel at diverse marine life, especially the turtles, before heading to The Rustic for a lunch filled with Texas-inspired flavors. In the afternoon, we’d explore the serene beauty of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, walking through its stunning seasonal displays and lush gardens. It would be a peaceful way to connect with nature and enjoy the fresh air. For dinner, we’d visit Cane Rosso, where we’d savor their famous wood-fired Neapolitan pizza.
We’d also make time for Italian cuisine and theater, starting with lunch at Il Pastaio, where we’d enjoy fresh pasta and decadent desserts. In the evening, we’d catch a performance at Bass Performance Hall, an elegant venue showcasing world-class plays and musicals. Another day would be all about interactive dining, with lunch at Bros Korean BBQ & Shabu Shabu, where we’d cook flavorful hotpot dishes at the table. Afterward, we’d explore the Sea Life Aquarium in Grapevine, marveling at their fascinating marine exhibits. A sweet treat from Marble Slab Creamery, with all our favorite mix-ins, would be the perfect way to end the day.
We’d also dive into local history and culture with visits to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, filled with engaging and interactive exhibits. Dinner that evening would bring us back to Meso Maya, as it’s too good not to visit twice. To mix in some shopping and local flavor, we’d spend a day at the Bishop Arts District, browsing unique shops and enjoying a coffee break at Oddfellows. Dinner that night would take us back to Omi Korean BBQ, where we’d relive the fun of interactive grilling.
To end the week, we’d enjoy a relaxing morning walk at White Rock Lake, taking in the tranquil scenery. For a farewell meal, we’d head to El Ranchito Restaurant, a gem in Oak Cliff serving traditional Mexican cuisine and known for its vibrant atmosphere, mariachi music, and incredible dishes. This itinerary would highlight the best of DFW, showcasing its rich culture, diverse culinary scene, and unique attractions, ensuring an unforgettable week filled with joy and connection.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to a few incredible people who have been instrumental in my journey, both personally and professionally. First and foremost, I want to thank my parents for their unwavering support throughout my educational journey. Pursuing higher education wasn’t always easy, and there were moments when balancing university studies with life’s challenges felt overwhelming. Yet, my parents were always there, offering words of encouragement, lending their support, and reminding me of the importance of perseverance. Their belief in me provided the foundation I needed to keep pushing forward, even when the path seemed uncertain.
I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my friend Juan Olivera. Juan was a constant source of support during my master’s program—a time when I was not only striving to grow academically but also personally as I took steps to become a mental health provider. His encouragement, listening ear, and understanding were invaluable, and I’m so thankful that our friendship has continued to grow even as our professional lives evolve. Juan remains someone I can count on to celebrate successes and navigate challenges, and I truly appreciate the role he has played in my story.
Another individual who deserves recognition is Angel Ayala. As a freshly graduated young adult with a bachelor’s degree, I felt uncertain and a bit lost about what my next steps should be. Angel took the time to sit with me, share his knowledge about the counseling field, and explain the transformative and impactful work therapists do. He helped me see how this profession could allow me to support others on their journey to growth and help them live the lives they aspire to. That conversation sparked the inspiration and clarity I needed to pursue counseling as a career, and it’s a moment I’ll always hold dear.
Each of these individuals has played a pivotal role in shaping the person and professional I am today. From the steadfast love and support of my parents to the friendship and encouragement of Juan, and the mentorship and insight offered by Angel, I’m deeply grateful for their contributions to my journey. Their belief in me has made all the difference, and I carry their influence with me every step of the way.
