We had the good fortune of connecting with Isaac Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isaac, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think success starts with loving what you do. If you have a passion for something, it will be easy for you to spend time exploring the craft. Then you have to transform that passion into honed skills by staying curious. I try to spend time every day learning something new or challenging myself with new projects that are a little beyond my current skill set.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think advertising is exciting. I wake up every day, motivated by new challenges. I love being able to step into my clients’ world, learn about what they do, and then help them share their products with others. I think what sets me apart is my multidisciplinary approach. I enjoy honing my craft across many disciplines, such as; creative direction, animation, 3D, and finishing. I really enjoy crafting compelling imagery, how I get here, and what tools I use changes all the time. I think building a solid base of general knowledge builds a strong foundation for your craft. This can be a great way to learn what you love doing the most and be a platform to cross between more specialized fields with ease. Software and technology will change all the time, but having a firm grasp of the fundamentals will set you up for success. I think the other thing that is important when working in a creative field is to keep an eye on work-life balance. It can be a consuming career that will take as much from you as you offer it. Early in my career, I was working constantly and it led to me feeling burned out by the industry. Eventually, I learned to step back a bit and I personally found that now that I make a concerted effort to keep that balance more in check – my work has improved. I definitely think living a happy life feeds into your creativity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend in town and wanted them to see Dallas I would probably start the day with a stroll through the arboretum and then head into Bishop Arts to meander through the shops. I’m a total foodie so for dinner I would recommend exploring all the awesome restaurants Dallas has to offer. There are so many great options that it’s hard to narrow it down. Worst case, Trinity Groves is always a great option since there are som many options within walking distance of each other.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my fiance, Lindsey Goldstein. Not only is she a fantastic person, but she is also an incredible motivational force in my life. From the start, Lindsey gave me the support I needed to walk away from gainful employment and take the risk of starting my own company. That support continues as she uses her expertise as a Creative Director to provide feedback on my work and be a sounding board for my ideas. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am without her.
