We had the good fortune of connecting with Immanual Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Immanual, what’s your definition for success?
Success, to me, is living a life without regrets- rich with experiences and positive memories. This means having the physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual freedom to choose my experiences and create experiences for those in my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was a cancer scientist working on novel cancer therapeutics, who then started a small business serving seniors, subsequently became a trainer for workplace compassion skills, and now working as a school teacher. In the middle of changing professions and identities, the one unchanging element about me is my passion for self-discovery, for writing, and for creating pathways for joyful living.
I have written 8 books. Writing each of these has been a labor of love. The last book I wrote, The Road to Kedarnath lays out a human blueprint for healing and hope. This book placed #1 in six Amazon categories. I built a framework for practical compassion in workplaces, which I shared in companies including Facebook, Amazon and Salesforce. I have been recently building virtual reality experiences for Made for Joy, and building a stress management program for a big University in the west coast.
I have not been afraid to follow my passions- be it writing, or creating programs, or helping people maneuver through challenges as a certified life coach. My mantra is that we live life only once, so we need to make it authentic. We should be constantly striving to understand who we are, what drives us, how we can nurture happiness inside-out. If we recognize passion, we should not be afraid to follow them, while holding on to the threads of practicality. And it really helps to be surrounded by people who buy into our dreams. So creating and nurturing relationships that matter is a critical part of this process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My itinerary would include Pioneer Plaza, the Stockyards at Fortworth, the Dallas Zoo, The Kennedy Museum, The Arboretum, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, George W Bush Presidential Library and Museum, Dallas holocaust and human rights museum, Arbor hills nature preserve, Lake Lewisville, the National Videogame Museum.
I would take them on multi-cuisine tours, so they can experience the diversity and depth of culinary offerings that Dallas has to offer. One of the joys of being here in DFW is that we can experience the best of food from all over the world without having to travel far. So I would take them out to a new international food experience for every meal.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is for my wife, Savitha Sundar. She is an Occupational Therapist who passionately advocates for inclusion for children with special needs. She is a perfect example of the idea that love is what shows up as action. I admire her relentless passion, her authenticity of thought and action, and her non-egoistical approach to life. She has made a huge difference for the many children she has served – as a school-based therapist and as a part of Changing Perspectives, which is an inclusion program she serves in. Savitha has been and continues to be, my personal inspiration to walk my journeys with grace.
