Meet Honey T | DJ & Performing Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Honey T and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Honey T, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea to start DJ’ing came to me in 2020 as the pandemic was beginning. I used to go live on Instagram on Friday nights for “club quarantine” and would just play music and interact with my followers (with a little alcohol involved hah!). Sometimes we’d do themed nights like all Beyonce or throwback music. I vividly remember thinking “I wish I could be mixing this right now”. Not too long after, I bought a beginner controller and taught myself how to mix.
To be honest, I never intended to make this a business. I’ve been training as a choreography dancer for 7 years so music has always been a big part of me. Having songs in mind to mix came naturally. I just wanted to make mixes that I enjoyed, and when I would post them on Instagram I found others were enjoying them too which only made it that much better. For a while, I posted “Mini Mix Monday”‘s which I think is how people started to want to actually hire me as a DJ.
I’m incredibly blessed to have been able to make this a business in such a short amount of time, especially when that wasn’t the intention in the first place. I’m a student every day just trying to better my craft and learn from the amazing people I’ve been able to meet since I became a DJ.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Every time I step into the DJ booth, I still have a moment where I think to myself “I can’t believe I get do this, who would’ve thought?”. Being a DJ has taught me so much about people. It has taught me the importance of being able to read a room and connect with every person there whether it’s 3 people or 300. It has taught me how important genuine support is. One of the biggest things I’ve noticed and love about the culture is respect and support of other DJ’s and establishments. Everyone is so unique, it’s really cool to be able to connect with other DJ’s and meet new people who appreciate music just as much as you do.
Being a Latina and female DJ is also something that is still not widely seen, and I am honored that I get to represent in that way. There’s so many women in Dallas that are killing it right now and it’s so inspiring to see and be a part of. There are still certain challenges we face because it is still a very male dominated industry but step by step those barriers are being broken.
I’m most excited to keep developing myself as a DJ and brand. In 2021, I was incredibly blessed to be booked every weekend for most of the year. One of my goals is to create more content to be able to post on social media and perhaps throw an event of my own. I’m honestly just excited to keep growing and collaborating with amazing people.
My favorite thing about being a DJ is the fact that I get to meet so many cool people from all walks of life, the power of music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I can always enjoy a good meal and for that I like to go to Terry Black’s BBQ in Deep Ellum, one of my favorite spots for sure! On a Monday night, I like to go to Curfew Bar in Ft. Worth for Meet Me Underground. Excellent curation of DJ’s every week spinning House music. It’s such a feel good and dance party vibe. On a Thursday night, I’d highly recommend going to The Free Man in Deep Ellum for some good Cajun food and some live Jazz music. We have some really good museums in Dallas and I also like to go to the arboretum in the spring/summer time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely would not be here without the support of my parents, they are without a doubt my number one fans. To my friends who have been with me on this journey since day one and have been to countless gigs.
Big shoutout to Cory B for always holding it down and my mentor DJ S.O.U.L.Jah for guiding and supporting me in this journey at any time. And to all the people who I’ve been able to connect with through DJ’ing so far that continue to support me. Thank you so much!
