We had the good fortune of connecting with Hollis Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hollis, what are you inspired by?
I am incredibly inspired by clients, who are brave enough to take creative control of their career. Pursuing a fulfilling career requires vulnerability, perseverance and grit. They continually inspire me to show up and do this great work.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Career Design has been providing expert career coaching services for over four decades. My goal is to help my clients create a rewarding and successful career path by maximizing their gifts, talents, and what they love to do most. I became passionate about purpose after discovering my own. I know first hand what it’s like being in the wrong career. I spent years marketing and branding a variety of companies, including several Fortune 500 clients. While I found great success, it never felt right. I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there must be more. I began using my branding, self-development and marketing skills to help a few friends re-vamp their career brand. What started out as a side-hustle has now turned into my career. When doing this work I feel energized, hopeful and in the exact right spot. I feel incredibly blessed to help others on their journey to finding their sweet spot. Career Design was founded and originally owned by Dr. Helen Harkness, one of the very first career coaches in the United States. When Heather Armstrong purchased the company, she brought me on board as a partner. We are both devoted to helping as many people as possible create fulfilling career paths… at all stages of their career.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love having visitors! These days, most of my friends who come in town bring their kids, so family-friendly is crucial. DFW has a lot of great parks, and we would try to hit up my favorites – Andy Brown Park in Coppell, Doubletree Park Ranch in Highland Village, and Bicentennial Park in Southlake. For meals, I love going places that are walkable or with a great patio — J Macklin in Coppell, Bumbershoot BBQ in Argyle, Main Street in Grapevine, and Legacy West. I love to find one big activity when people are in town, whether it’s the State Fair, Grapevine Main St event, a carnival, or pumpkin patch.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am forever thankful for the wonderful women in my life who believed in me before I believed in myself. To Heather Armstrong, who brought me into the Career Design fold. To Marsha Clark, who catapulted my leadership journey. To Dottie Gandy, for being my first and most supportive client. And of course to my mom, Kathy Tavano, for always being my biggest fan.
