We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
I would say that in the beauty industry, that I was told I wouldn’t get a full clientele until I was 2 years into the business. I saw that as a challenge and ended up working my tail end off and gaining a full clientele within 6-8 MONTHS. I put my foot down and I wasn’t going to let someone else dictate how long it took my business to grow.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got to where I am in a very unconventional way. I faced eviction, childbirth, breakups, homelessness and just questioning every decision I had ever made. What sets my business apart from any others is the fact that I want to be that ear that listens to you, your hopes and dreams and be that encouragement you need (something I didn’t have a lot of from those closest to me). I’m most proud of my business for its expansion after 18 months. I have worked extremely hard to create a sanctuary for all of my renters and clients. One thing I’ve learned is that strangers can become some of your best friends and biggest supporters. Even if everyone in your circle is telling you that you can’t do it, do it anyway. Prove them wrong. I can’t count how many times someone told me I needed to “get a real job” since I had just had my son. I knew I needed steady income but I didn’t want a 9-5; I wanted the flexibility for my son. My son has been coming to work with me since he was 8 months old. It’s truly a family oriented business and all of clients that have met him absolutely love him. I joke that they came for the lashes and stayed for him.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’re definitely going to the casino for the arcade or concert. We also have a lake so depending on the season, we could go paddle boarding. After we would go to a local favorite, City Limits or Old Iron Post. Both restaurants are so good! We would also have to do some shopping downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are definitely a few people who deserve a shoutout. As cliche as it may be; my mom and dad, fiancé Justin, my clients that have continued to help me improve my craft and my sweet tiny human. All of them have been such a blessing in this little journey of mine.
