We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

Wow this is a great question! Where do we start!

I have the good fortune of working at the biotech magnate Genentech. A company who got its start in a scientist’s garage that revolutionized an entire industry and became a multi-billion dollar powerhouse.

Founded in 1976 by a biochemist and a venture capitalist, Genentech pioneered recombinant DNA technology, laying the foundation for modern biotech which is an industry that has created life saving therapies to improve patient’s lives and cure many patients with challenging diagnosis’s across the world.

Genentech offers a fascinating microcosm of where science, business, and innovation converge. It’s a world where groundbreaking discoveries coexist with bottom-line decision making, in a beautiful dance that yields the fruit for revolutionary advancements. So, the next time you hear about the latest biotech breakthrough, remember, there’s often a lot more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Absolutely , happy to share! I currently work as a Principal National Account Executive where my primary focus is on building strategic partnerships, inspiring and influencing teams to create positive impact for patients and driving equitable market access for all patients. The sum total of this collaboration ultimately results in contributing to improved patient outcomes. Recently , I received the recognition as one of the “40 Under 40 in Oncology” by the prestigious 40 Under 40 in Cancer initiative which has further opened doors to benefit patients and level the playing field for diverse patient populations to receive access to care. Driving change for diverse patient populations is such a passion of mine, and I value the fact that Genentech is committed to this very thing.

In addition to this , building  and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders across diverse channels, including payers, providers, and patients, is a key focus of mine. Ive learned over the years how important it is to understanding customers needs and tailoring solutions that deliver value.

Lastly, I’m deeply passionate about ensuring that innovative cancer treatments reach the patients who need them most. This passion fuels advocacy for patient access and my commitment to delivering value-based solutions with the best in the business. It’s a blessing to work with such amazingly talented individuals at a pioneering company like Genentech.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Oh the places we’d go! Dallas has so much to offer. Day 1 would be all about Cowboys, Culture, and Craft Cocktails.

In the morning we’d kick things off with a tour of The Star in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Cheer on the practice squad, explore the Ford Center, and snap a pic with the Ring of Honor statues.

For lunch, we’d immerse ourselves in Dallas’ art scene. Stroll through the vibrant urban oasis, Klyde Warren Park, and admire the sculptures at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

To cap the night off, we’d wrap with live music and craft cocktails at CatBird or Monarch.

Day 2 would be all about exploring the Foodie Paradise of Frisco and having fun!

In the morning we’d indulge in brunch at Frisco’s Legacy Hall Food Hall, which is chalked full of small eateries that are yummy and ultimately curated by amazing small business owners. You can find anything from fluffy pancakes to spicy tacos, with tons of options to please every palate.

In the afternoon, we’d explore Legacy West, a luxurious outdoor shopping mall with high-end boutiques and designer brands, and take a break for a leisurely southern meal at Haywire.

At night, we’d catch a game at Globe Life Field, home of the World Chanpion Texas Rangers, and root for the home team!

On day 3, we’d explore Nature N’ Chill and learn more about Dallas History.

In the AM we’d reconnect with nature at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano. Hike or bike through wooded trails, spot birds in the ponds, and soak in the serene atmosphere.

The afternoon would be focused on learning about South Dallas’ fascinating history at the Pan African Connection where you can connect with local Dallasites, and learn about the city’s rich history and shop and purchase authentic pieces from an array of artist across the African diaspora.

In the evening we’d experience Dallas’ southern dinning scene and dress up for cocktails and, dance the night away at Pangea then transition to a lovely dinner at Southern Roots! Both have amazing southern flair and all of the charm!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, where do we start with the shoutouts , It is so clear that it takes a village to create impact in this industry. The trajectory of my career was only made possible by Jesus’s keeping and care , in addition to “villagers” who have lovingly corrected, lifted, supported and looked out for me over the years. It has been the greatest honor to have a board of directors to sound ideas off with and consider their guidance with all major decisions. This board includes (and is not limited to) my parents, Daniel and Marva Smith, husband Jason Ross, Mentors Jennifer Kim, Tamicka James, … change makers Quita Highsmith, Jayson Johnson and trusted advisors Gabe Adelman, Sandra Ajisafe , Ted Henderson, Tanja Powers, Donishea Martinez , Tracy Griffin, Pierre Simon , Cayzar Walford, and Juny Simpson . Each of these individuals has taken time to pour into me by providing “real-talk” and practical guidance , in addition to challenging my decision making which has been a catalyst for further development.
