We had the good fortune of connecting with Harmony Power and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harmony, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The place where risk taking is most apparent in my life would probably be towards the classes I take at school. Ever since I started high school, a goal I set for myself early on (and followed through with) is to take at least one class that I am supposed to be enrolled in later on. In my freshman year, I took 2 math classes concurrently in order to be ahead of my grade level mathematics by at least one year. This served as a very big risk, due to the fact math did not come easy to me. Doubling up on math classes was definitely one of my largest personal stressors all year, but I was able to learn the concept of adapting to adversity by perseverance. Since then, I feel like the risk I chose to take my freshman year has helped me muster up the confidence to continue conquering larger battles, and taking more risks. Almost like a confidence booster.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
On the side of being a high school student, I am involved in Amnesty International, a nonprofit that specializes in the protection of human rights. For my school Chapter, I serve as the Public Outreach Coordinator, which basically means I connect our chapter to other ones in the area and internationally. As I have already mentioned, I am an aspiring writer as well. I enjoy writing non fiction pieces, poems, novellas, and short stories for my portfolio. Over the summer, I went to Duke University to study creative writing and literature from Lorenza Starace, a professor with a PhD in English. Apart from typical writing, I have also done writing through coding (AI). I did an Inspirit AI course where a group of other students and I created a presentation on self driving cars, and presented in to Stanford and MIT students. I also enjoy writing in other languages, such as Spanish, which is why I am involved in Spanish Club and Spanish National Honor Society. I think the biggest challenge I had to overcome, if any, was finding something I was truly passionate about, and following through with it. In order to stand out from others, I believe it’s critical to do as much as you can, which is also how you gain your identity; and getting really good at whatever that thing might be, which comes naturally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would probably start early with breakfast at The Aussie Grind, an Australian-oriented breakfast spot that has some of the best coffee in the area, (in my opinion). Then, I would probably show them some of the most notable locations Frisco is known for, such as the newly remodeled library, or The Star where the cowboys, Dallas’s football team, train. I would also take them to Legacy West or to Stonebriar Mall, where we can do some shopping and get something to eat. In addition, I also think it’s important to sightsee: like at the botanical gardens at The Arboretum in Dallas or the Butterfly Garden. Places like those two always create so much inspiration and leave visitors with so much to take home with.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my dad, Steven Power. Apart from my large interest in writing and journalism, studying business in college has always been something I’ve wanted to do. Working with others, creating a product, and making ideas into a reality has always sparked an interest within me. My dad works in the business industry, being affiliated with companies that range from technology to products; continuing to make the most out of the position life puts him in. He works so hard to create opportunities for my sisters and I that he never had growing up. His inspiration and consistent support is one I am the most grateful for in my life. When things get hard, you can count on him to be there for you with advice, a shoulder to cry on, or even a Starbucks drink. He’s a girl dad, after all.
