We had the good fortune of connecting with Girls in STEM at Liberty High School and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Girls in STEM, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Sophie and I (Gauri) were both passionate about careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields, but we noticed many other girls in our grade didn’t have the exposure to career pathways in this field. We wanted to create a club at our school that combatted this issue and empower women to join the STEM pathway. With this interest of closing the gender gap, we reached out to the local DFW non-profit, Girls in STEM, and decided to found the Liberty High School chapter of the wonderful organization that aligns with our motives.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Through Girls in STEM, we are dedicated to closing the gender gap in the STEM field by exposing our peers to different careers along the STEM pathway. We host different STEM-related activities, invite guest speakers, and contribute to the community through volunteering. So far, we have reached about 30 girls at our school and looking to expand even more! Although our club is pretty successful at the moment, the journey definitely wasn’t easy. One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting the word out to girls around the school since we started as a new club, but we realized that promoting on social media and flyers around the school really helped us attract more members and get where we are today. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that no matter how big or how small our club is, we are continuing making a huge difference in our community because even just a positive impact on a couple females in our school is still a contribution to reducing the gender gap in the STEM field. If you are a woman and are hesitant to enter the STEM field out of fear, be courageous and give it a try. You never know if you will enjoy it or not unless you try!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of our favorite spots in the DFW area would definitely be Legacy West, Klyde Warren Park, the Dallas Arboretum, and just exploring Dallas downtown!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to give a shoutout to the non-profit organization, Girls in STEM, which provides us with many resources and support that helps us keep our club successful.
