We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginny Hudnut and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ginny, what do you attribute your success to?
I am deeply committed to excellent customer service and I think that this has contributed to my success. I’m so passionate about the work that I do with House of Colour Dallas and this stems from the fact that I’ve found a job that does not feel like work! It’s the dream. Don’t they say if you find a job you love you never work a day in your life? I do everything I can to make sure each person feels their absolute best each time they sit in my chair. I want each client to feel comfortable, informed, to laugh and to have the lightbulb moment of, “wow, I look good” when they see themselves in their best colors.

The work that I do truly empowers my clients. Each person leaves feeling beautiful not because I’ve added things to them or altered them. I simply show them the unique, natural beauty that they already had. I help them harness it through the power of color and style harmony.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a franchise of House of Colour which is a London-based company that’s been providing exceptional color and style analysis services for over 35 years. Our services help you find the colors and styles that create the most harmony with you to help you nail a signature style and feel confidant in what you wear. The work we do is based on color theory and showing people how they scientifically look better in certain colors than others. You have a range of shades that make you look younger, refreshed, glowy and bright. Alternatively there are colors that can take that glow away, make you look tired and even sick. For a style analysis, there are silhouettes, necklines, patterns, and details that make you feel amazing in your clothes. House of Colour Color and Style analysis help you build a closet that you love.

Eight years ago my sister had her colors done and, to be perfectly honest, I was pretty skeptical. “You paid how much to have someone tell you what colors to wear?!” But I watched her transform and look so beautifully clear and bright in her colors. Once I got mine done about a year later with the incredible Karen Blanc and then I was a believer. I absolutely loved how beautifully freeing it was to only shop from my palette. I would get decision fatigue when shopping and end up buying something just so-so or only because of the price. Once I began only choosing colors that honored my coloring my closet began to open up and I had so many more choices because everything went together. It became a capsule wardrobe without me really trying.

When my husband and I moved back to my hometown of Dallas, TX I knew that House of Colour would be a dream job. I bought my franchise in 2018 and co-owned it with a friend of mine, Lindsey Benda. She is a fabulous Winter and we worked together to help make Dallas even more colorful. We were the only consultants in Texas at the time which is wild because these are absolutely brilliant services that I believe everyone needs. Lindsey went on to get her Master’s degree and I’ve owned the franchise since then.

I’ve been so blessed to have clients who spread the word and are out there looking fabulous in their colors! I do not spend any money marketing because my business comes from referrals. I’m so thankful that people choose to come get their colors done with me!

Throughout the past four years I have been searching for that ever-elusive work-life balance. I’ve looked and concluded that it does not exist! I have three children under five and work anywhere from 30-50 hours in a week. In a typical week I’m serving clients with color analysis, shipping makeup orders, looking for shopping links by season, doing Zoom style calls at night, hosting style classes on a Saturday, packing lunches, running kids to preschool, working on homework, etc. I love it all! Some weeks my family get tons of my attention and some weeks work gets more attention. It’s a dance and I’m learning to love the busyness of it all. I want to run a successful business and enjoy motherhood at the same time and thankfully this franchise does allow for that. I’m able to set my own schedule which is a huge blessing. Thankfully the work I do with each client fills me up because I know that my clients are learning their color and style and they will use that information everyday!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My husband and I both love coffee so we hit up Eiland Coffee Roasters, Communion Neighborhood Cooperative, and Staycation all the time. Delicious lunch spots local to us in Richardson are Chocolate Angel, Olive Burger and Ten50 BBQ. For dinner we absolutely love Mi Cocina, Haystack near Hillcrest (our kids can run around and play which is always a win), Lockwood Distilling Company for an amazing cocktail, Thai Noodle Wave and Sueno. Dessert is almost always a scoop of cappuccino crunch from Tongue in Cheek!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have three groups of people to thank for my success. The training from House of Colour, my beautiful clients, and my family. The training that we receive is so hands-on and practical. I trained for seven days in Kansas City in 2018 for color analysis with one other consultant. We learned about color theory, harmony, makeup application and I use all of that with each client. Style training was another seven days in 2020 and that service is the second-piece of the puzzle when it come to loving your wardrobe.

Secondly I need to thank the clients who have come to my studio and leave and wear their colors and makeup each day! The word has spread thanks to each of you using your color fan at a store or sharing about it with your book club or putting your lipstick on after brunch. Each of those conversations have brought more amazing clients to me and I am so grateful.

My family, my village, are the people who really have supported me the most since starting House of Colour Dallas. My husband encourages me to provide even better service to each person I get to work with, my mom has watched my children for countless hours, my sister originally got her colors done and is the whole reason behind my passion for this job, my Dad gives me the best entrepreneurial advice. They are so important to me and I would be where I am without their help. Thank you Matt, Mom, Dad and Winsor!
