We had the good fortune of connecting with Gifton Milburn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gifton, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand is actually identifying what I wanted it to be. It was the moment that I was clear on what my brand is that I saw real success. Everyone is known for something. With the brand and the business, I needed to know what it was that I wanted to be known for.

Our wildest dreams can come to life once we can see them, vividly. Initially my business offered a multitude of plant-related services in an attempt to capture a wide audience. This led to inefficiencies and an overall unsustainable business model. With an unmeasurable amount of trial and error, my business thrived once I chose one direction in which to take my business. I chose to provide one service and worked to perfect my offering at each opportunity.

Plant Daddy Dallas is a persona and a well-functioning business. Once a plan is set in motion, my belief is that consistency with the one item or action will provide the results that are desired.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Plant Daddy Dallas is a plant design and consulting firm. We specialize in helping our neighbors find plants and other vegetation that will bring life to their spaces, whether indoors or on exterior of their home. Our main focus is landscape plant installation. While there are many companies that will be able to complete the work we do, we separate ourselves with our technology. Our digital mock-ups not only share a visual representation each project, but allows us to more clearly communicate our value.

2021, I was a MBA (Masters of Business Administration) Degree recipient and an Operations Manager for an insurance-tech company. By the end of 2021, that all changed. My focus was shifted from what I was trained to value towards my internal peace and fulfillment. Plant Daddy Dallas was born of internal love for plants and a vision of how I could use that trait to build a successful career. Each day is a new lesson and a chance to be better than the day before. It is not easy! It’s a daily reaffirming of one self’s goals and a test of determination. However, the biggest hurdle was the decision to “jump”. That the point when betting on yourself becomes more important than remaining comfortable. For me, this was when I decided to resign and Operations Manager and focus on growing Plant Daddy Dallas.

This business excites me every day because there is a bountiful amount of opportunity. Plant Daddy Dallas serves the DFW community by installing flowers and plants. However, there is much opportunity to educate the community about general plant care, support community gardens, produce branded merchandise, lead plant-related workshops, and more. Plant Daddy Dallas is a unique business that will allow me to think beyond what I thought was possible. I have learned that If I can do one thing very well, that one thing will pay me enough to do more. It was when I made the decision to do one thing, my business became more recognized for the services I provided. It was the point when I made the decision not to quit that I truly learned that I can get what I want in this life.

I want people to know that Plant Daddy Dallas is the manifestation of internal God-given gifts being utilized to make a boy’s dream a reality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any visitor to Dallas, Texas must experience two things…excellent food and live music!

A perfect weekend would be filled with brunch, a little booze, and the tune of a base cello.

We would start the Saturday having a hearty brunch at Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar, each lunch at Pecan Lodge BBQ, and dinner at Nick & Sams. To wrap up the night, we would go to hear live bands play at The Free Man Cajun Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my mother, Mary Louise English! During my childhood she often spent her weekends shopping. Many of these trips were related to material purchases for her various flower arrangement projects. Bouquets and reefs were her specialty. My mom would also maintain her home’s garden beds and consistently won “Lawn of the Month” in our neighborhood. Although I hated it at the time, my mom would always drag me along with her. Not only did I have a front row seat during her arrangement making, I was also there getting my hands dirty in preparation for Spring.

The lessons learned were pressed upon me over the years and for that I am thankful. She would be proud to know that her passions were such an inspiration for an incredibly positive change in my life.
