We had the good fortune of connecting with Gayla Touray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I had wanted to start my own notary service for about 5 years now. I had always been told about the importance of having multiple revenue streams and I wanted to be able to have greater financial security outside of what I do professionally.

The pandemic started and in looking at how many families that had been affected by job loss I knew it was time to finally carry out the vision that had been with me for a long time! It was time for me to pursue my own! Albeit the pandemic caused a lot of tragedy in the world, it also created opportunities for a lot of people to dig deeper and refocus on family, their aspirations, their inspirations, new hobbies, entrepreneurship and more. It created an opportunity for my time to come too!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I have been a registered nurse for more than 15 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas at Arlington. Later, I decided to further my education and went to The University of Texas at Tyler where I received my Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on administration. I started my career as a Trauma ICU nurse in one of the local level 1 hospitals and continued to progress to other areas within the nursing field.

Nursing was a way for me to support others in what may sometimes be a tragic journey. It was a way for me to show that person that someone, in fact, a stranger even cares. I was born with a servanthood spirit and with that same spirit, one way that I have been giving back in my business is that my business supports dinners for a set number of families every 3-4 months. So many families are going through so much and I feel that if I can personally be there for at least one family, I have touched the lives of many. Servanthood is so important to me in my professional career and what I do within my business!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Down time is extremely hard to come by! I am such a homebody that loves to attend to my garden, so I usually don’t do much during the week. However, if I were entertaining a friend on the weekend, we would likely start off with a patio brunch at Primo’s in Uptown, and because I normally have a great time in that area and the fact that time flies, 5pm could quickly hit and I move closer to downtown and end up at Te Deseo, in the Harwood district. Their 2nd floor rooftop is a must that gives a good view of the adjacent local establishments! . That would be on a Saturday, but on a Sunday, it would likely be the same, but instead of Te Deseo, I would likely parlay at The Peoples Last Stand at Mockingbird Station! I appreciate their chill environment, and from 4-8pm they play straight old school hip hop, have an excellent DJ, and a good bar staff!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I have to give a huge shoutout to my mentor Mrs. Shelly Olliver! I met her some time ago while I was doing some volunteer work with the American Red Cross. I was going into homes within the community and helping to test and install smoke detectors. Mrs. Olliver’s home was a recipient of our services. As she and I talked I found out that she was in the notary business. She was excited that I shared interest so she gave me her business card and told me that when I was ready to commit to the work, she would love to mentor me. She expressed her sentiments of how it was important that we all work together and help and support one another.

I saved Mrs. Shelly’s business card and a few years later when I contacted her to let her know that I was ready, she did not hesitate in providing me with information, resources, and sharing her knowledge.

She is always encouraging, uplifting, and most importantly always available. She has become family to me! A woman of great integrity, that’s highly spiritual, and full of love! I am truly thankful for Mrs. Olliver!
