We had the good fortune of connecting with Gavin Starkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gavin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has been a major part of my career. I took a risk and paid to go to barber school now im cutting all types of people! I took a risk with the content , and was spending my own money to buy different products and record videos ,Paying for editing software and things of such.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I definitely call my haircuts and my content videos my “art” because it took time to perfect my haircuts and my content videos exactly how I wanted them to be. What sets me apart I think is definitely how positive I am and how happy I make myself look especially since im in a wheelchair doing it all and being happy when others think I have every reason not to be. Was it easy? No not it all , everything in life you have to work for and everyday even when I dont feel like doing anything is the days I definitely have to get up and work because it will pay off in the end. Something I learned along the way was that people will always criticize what you do but to be successful and happy you really have to learn to love what you do and make sure you’re doing for yourself or for the right reasons and not because you want to give in to what the world wants . Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay so basically the itinerary would be Monday would be a chill kinda night id start the week off by going to one of my favorite places , Main Event to play arcade games and just have fun. Tuesday we would go out to eat at Kitchen & Kocktails great food , Wednesday would be the day we go sit and paint , Thursday would be a night out in deep ellum , Friday is the best day to visit the best movie theater “B&B Theatres” in Red Oak. Saturday would be the night we go out to a club or lounge (not one specifically) and sunday we would wake up for church.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my entire family they all care for me and lookout for me so much , theyve always been here by my side and kept me motivated and feeling loved! I love them all.
