We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Mayeaux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrett, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my own chiropractic business, and more recently, I’ve begun pivoting toward growing my coaching business—which supports my dream of racing as a professional triathlete.

From the moment I decided to pursue a career in chiropractic, I knew I wanted to run my own practice. What drew me to the profession was the variety it offered in patient care—from how much time you spend with each individual to the treatment methods you can apply, such as adjustments, soft tissue therapy, dry needling, and rehab. I was especially passionate about taking a comprehensive, individualized approach to musculoskeletal care. I’ve always found it more fulfilling and intellectually engaging to dig into the root cause of someone’s issue and tailor treatment to their specific needs, rather than taking a cookie-cutter approach.

Throughout my experience, I observed many clinics that either relied solely on adjustments or, on the flip side, threw every possible modality at every patient—often using the same protocol for everyone. I wanted to offer something different: high-value, affordable care specifically tailored to endurance athletes. This population is frequently underserved and misunderstood when it comes to injury management and performance support. As a runner and triathlete myself, I’m able to relate to these athletes, speak their language, and earn their trust. I also genuinely enjoy studying the injury patterns that tend to affect runners, swimmers, and triathletes more than the general population.

Working with the world’s best triathletes through my time with the Professional Triathletes Organization reignited a spark in me. I realized I had put my own dreams of racing professionally on hold, and I felt a strong pull to give it a real shot. While I’m still young, I’ve decided to take the leap—to pursue something I’m deeply passionate about. I’ve intentionally restructured my time, reducing hours in the clinic so I can focus more on coaching athletes and training myself. This shift allows me to lean fully into the pursuit of a professional triathlon career.

What should our readers know about your business?
I coach triathletes and runners through my team, Train Pegasus Triathlon, a newly established extension of the well-known Train Pegasus Running Team here in Dallas. This transition happened recently, when I brought together the athletes I was already coaching and merged them into the running team that a close friend of mine built into one of the most prominent groups in the area. By joining forces, we’re excited to expand the Train Pegasus brand to include multisport athletes and build something truly special for the endurance community.

My goal is to take on coaching full-time—to simplify my life and focus entirely on two things: coaching and training. I’ve come to realize that spreading myself too thin takes a toll—mentally, physically, and relationally. I was constantly exhausted: too tired to train well, and too drained to be fully present with friends and my fiancée. When I began reducing my hours at the chiropractic office, I noticed a big shift. I felt more balanced, less stressed, and had more energy for meaningful training sessions—and more joy in connecting with the people around me. As I became more engaged in the community, those relationships naturally led to more coaching opportunities as well.

Starting my chiropractic office was one of the biggest leaps of faith I’ve taken. I had less than $10,000 to my name and no guarantees—but I believed in the path. The early months were tough and full of uncertainty, but I kept holding on to a phrase that guided me: “Straight is the path and narrow is the way.” That saying carries deep meaning for me, both in my faith and in how I approach business. Few people leave the comfort of a stable job to pursue self-employment, and even fewer succeed. I knew what it would take—I just had to be willing to do the work. Over the next three years, I did. My practice grew year after year, and I reached a place of stability and success.

And yet, I’ve decided to take another leap—stepping away from the business I built to pursue coaching and a career in professional triathlon. It’s not an easy decision to close the doors on something I poured so much into, but I’m confident it’s the right one. I feel excited, inspired, and driven. I believe that with passion for my athletes and this sport, I’ll find success again—just as I did the first time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiancé Bonnie Caulfield, who gives me confidence through love and supports me by helping determine actionable steps towards the future I want.
