We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabby Elvessie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabby, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was 16 when I first joined DYP. I never thought it would turn into a career. I joined DYP because I finally found a place of belonging. My coach told me I should start taking poetry seriously I fought it for a while but destiny took hold. I just wanted to pour into the same org that poured into me. Now I can make sure it will be here for all the youth poets yet to come.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Dallas Youth Poets has always been for the misfits. A sacred space where we didn’t have to worry our secrets would slip out. Yes we poet. But it’s about something a little more than poetry. When I was a youth, my coaches pushed me to host the open mics and run the workshops. They trusted me more than most adults did at the time and it made an impact. They respected me more than most adults. Which made me demand respect from other adults. That’s what I want for my youth. Independence and blatant courage. We say we write in blood because we have never been afraid to spill our guts and pave our own way. Running DYP isn’t easy. It can be hard to find venues that support what we do or even adults who don’t want to censor the youth. DYP is mostly youth ran for that reason. During the summer when the youth get to travel our goal is that they don’t have to pay a dime which means dedication all year. We are blessed to have organization that partner with us to make things happen.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lively Pointe Youth Center this is often where we hold open mics and workshops. It’s great because the building is for youth 12-18
