We had the good fortune of connecting with FISD CTE SWENext Society of Women Engineers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi FISD CTE SWENext, what principle do you value most?
The value or principle that matters to CTE SWENext the most is closing the gender gap in engineering and STEM careers. Women often feel underrepresented and unwelcomed in engineering careers. SWE (Society of Women Engineers) works towards this cause. SWENext is the high school subset of SWE and here in the FISD chapter, we believe that every young girl should pursue their passion in a supportive environment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At CTE SWENext we work on engaging STEM projects, participate in STEM competitions, volunteer with middle school outreach, and conduct panels with college and professional SWE sections. We are most proud of our accomplishment in hosting a week-long engineering camp for middle school students. Our biggest challenge was how covid changed our meetings. We used to meet in person at the CTE center, but due to covid, we had to move our club meetings to zoom. The past year we worked on projects through zoom and conducted multiple panels with colleges and professionals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If our best friend was visiting the city we would take them to downtown Dallas to visit the Perot Museum, the Dallas Aquarium, and the Botanical gardens. We would take them out to dinner at Shops of Legacy because all of our members enjoy the restaurants out there. We would also take them out to McKinney to see Adriatica Village because we all just love the European architecture there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Mrs. Altman is our sponsor and she is a teacher at the CTE center. Without her support, the SWENext club wouldn’t exist. Abigail Ingle and Suveda Sannidhi were the founders of the club who worked to spread their message through this club. After they graduated high school, Sara Patel and Praveena Arni are the new President and Vice-President for the 2021-22 school year. CTE SWENext is only possible with the support of all officers and members. A big shout-out to all the officers: Rhea Rai, AnneMarie Stammerish, Nithya Samba, Ishika Aggrawal, Ipsa Dua, Akshita Pindi, Shreya Nimmagadda, Srinidhi Mahadevan, and Ananya Nagaraju.
