We had the good fortune of connecting with Faruq Abdul-Basir aka Ruqone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruqone, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I love music. I love creating. Being able to put the two together was always something I wanted to do, so I decided to do it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My goal has always been to have a different type of sound that separates me from the mainstream. I like merging hip hop sub genres and seeing how it turns out. Most of the time it works.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, we’re getting some pizza from Pequod’s. Then we’ll probably hit a baseball game, White Sox preferably. Depending on the person, we’ll hit the record store for some digging at some point. Then to the lab to listen to sample ideas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife. She goes record digging with me occasionally and puts up with the loud music in the house…and doesn’t nag me to turn it down.
