We had the good fortune of connecting with Eyat Kendra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eyat, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Cultivating will and discipline I believe has helped me to succeed.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a salon owner and Natural Hair Educator. The name of my salon is Eyat’s Natural Hair Salon. We specialize in the health and care of natural hair. We also produce a line of all plant-based hair care products called “Crafted by Eyat”. This line contains staple items that every natural needs for growth, moisture retention and scalp care. Particularly for people experiencing conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and alopecia.

What sets us apart from other salons is how we care for natural hair. Most salons will not shampoo or style very kinky 4c hair in its most natural state. What I like to tell my clients is that we do not fear your kinks and coils. Bring them to us to love on them. It is very important that all our stylists are passionate about hair. Natural hair care has the tendency to be very tedious. So, one must first have a love for the craft, to do it well.

Running a business is not easy and not for the faint of heart. I’m also, a Caribbean native and back home we say, “fire bun a weak heart”. It’s in our music and it is a philosophy I live by. Meaning, one must be courageous, strong and most important, willing to learn. I’ve spent several years learning the how to’s of business, by making mistakes, taking advice of course a lot of reading.

Overcoming challenges are an everyday thing, it’s not just in business, but life. Nothing lasts forever and troubles come and go. “This too shall pass” is what I tell myself. There is always a way, if not then it’s time to pivot and re-strategize to attain the end goal.

A few lessons that I’ve learned on this journey is that success comes about through consistency. One must be disciplined and eager to walk the long road. You must be dedicated to the cause, and it cannot always be about money.

I want the world to know that Eyat’s Natural Hair Salon, and Crafted by Eyat was created with the intention to heal and nurture from the outside in. What you put on hair and skin matters, we live in toxic world and using elements of nature on and in our bodies matters. The energies that allow over your crown (hair) matters. It matters to me, and I’d like it to matter to world as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is such a fun and vibrant place. I Id go to the “Weed Spot” for CBD infused drinks. To eat, I’d go to “Spiral Diner”, “Sankofa Kitchen”, “Desta Ethiopian Restaurant” or “Sheba Ethiopian Kitchen”. Visit the Pan African Connection, it’s the quickest trip to Africa without getting on a plane, literally. Hang out at “Heroes Lounge” for great food, music, dancing and drinks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my family, specifically my mother and partner. If not for their encouragement and support, I would not be the person I am today. My mother is the one who encouraged me from a very young age to nurture my talents. My spouse and partner in business, he sees the future before it happens. He loves to collaborate and is also committed to the overall goal. If not for this partnership, there would be no consistency. So, thank you both. I could not really put into words how grateful I am for their presence in my life.
