We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn E. Mosley-Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evelyn E., have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Giving up is not in my vocabulary. The slogan alone for my family is “The Mosley-Brooks Family Never Gives Up!’ For example, I have never run a marathon in my life. God promptly told me to run a thirteen-in-a-half-mile marathon. Something I had never practiced for; I am not one to run more than two miles without walking. I obeyed. It was one of many challenges I have faced in my life and persevered. Two in half hours had passed, and everyone had finished the race but for me. The volunteers told me it was ok to quit, and I refused. Three hours, nine minutes later, and came in last place. I finished the race! I have a motto that sometimes the turtle winds, and on that day, I won. I was blessed to encourage many women either due to health, weight, confidence, and self-esteem. Many started exercising, walking, running, losing weight, living healthier lives, and overcoming insecurities, and for me, simply obeying and not giving up impacted so many people’s lives. We never know whose watching us, so giving up is never the answer. The Bible tells s, “The race is not to the swift…but time and chance happen to them all” (Ecclesiastes 9:11 NIV).
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my testimony. We all have choices to go right or go left; I went both. But, my heart wouldn’t rest with me being and staying left. One day I mustered the courage to go right. This process helped me overcome many generational strongholds; more importantly, I found my identity, eventually my voice. One that blesses me to speak life into many lives around the world. Further, I went back to school got my undergraduate degree in Management and Law. Later God called me to the ministry of counseling. I got a Masters’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. To polish within my
pursuing my DMIN Doctorate of Ministry Degree in Leadership. I am the first person on my mother’s side of the family to graduate college, attain a counseling degree and become a doctorate student.
Let us not forget the author of the two books. The first one, known as The Root of Hebrews 10:26, was written and published in June 2015. In an aim to signal that hell and heaven are absolute and willful, sin has heavy consequences. My second book, Abortion Was My Birth Control, was published on October 26, 2021. Within the book, I am transparent about my childhood struggles and sufferings due to having an abortion, and now Free!
Do not get me wrong; this journey is not for the faint. It takes tenacity, perseverance, great faith, tough skin, and the grace of God! I am here to testify whatever you want to be victorious in and overcome in your life. It is not impossible in Christ Jesus (Luke 1:37). I share and declare my mantra with you to you “never give up because giving up is not in our vocabulary.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For breakfast, Denny’s has the best pancakes and hash browns. I could eat dinner every night of the week at my favorite restaurant; the Wildwood Southlake has the best service and delicious Shrimp and grits to love! Olive Garden for lunch for their tossed salads, black olives, shredded white cheese with their original dressing, and hot garlic bread. For dessert, the Cheesecake Factory has the best original cheesecake with extra whip cream and strawberries. Sonics has the most creamy and natural fruit-tasting milkshakes. The Fire Cup Coffe has the best coffee in town. They brew their coffee from fresh grounded beans, peaceful and quiet lounging areas for in and outdoors with free wifi and soft listening inspirational music.
Gateway Church is a place where there is unity and people that love to love on people. The atmosphere is nonjudgmental, welcoming, warm, inviting, joyful, and they have a delightful book store.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to my sister Crystal Kay Bessent. She is one of the two people who encouraged me to write my book Abortion Was My Birth Control. When I was three months pregnant with my son, I almost had an abortion with him. I had scheduled an appointment to have it the next day before my sister walked into my room and handed me a book about an unsuccessful abortion of a baby girl. The book talked about this mother that attempted to have an abortion with her daughter, but the infant lived and endured some physical inadequacies. That invoked fear and sadness within my heart; I immediately canceled abortion. Because of my sister, my son is alive today and now twenty-eight years old.
