Meet Erin MeHarg | Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin MeHarg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I love to be creative and make things. In the past, people would often say “You should sell that!”, so I decided to do just that. I believe I get my entrepreneurial spirit form my parents, that had their now business years ago. I like the idea of being in charge of my own creativity. At times my daughter makes items and we will sell our goods at different markets. I love that I can share that with her.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to do something creative for a living. I have always loved taking art classes and learning different art forms. I have an Associates of Fine Arts degree. I love to paint and draw, however I haven’t done either in a long time. I love taking gently used items and reusing them in a creative way to make embellished clothes, pillows, and jewelry. That love for up-cycling led me to setting up booths at market shows. I then decided to go back to college and get my bachelors degree in Merchandise Marketing and Management at Wade College. At Wade College I took various business classes, computer classes, as well as digital marketing classes. I decided after graduation that I wanted to go into the field of Social Media & Marketing. I work part time for a realtor, Summit Cove Realty doing just that. Since I work part time, I am able to continue my business Check Your Vibe/University Vibes, which I started in June 2020. The challenge I have had to overcome is not looking at my business as a “side hustle”, or my “little” business, or a “hobby”. I have learned that as long as I look at my business as anything less than a business, it will always be less than. I am fully committed to my “Business” now and have BIG plans for it in the near future. I hope that one day someone will name me as their mentor and I hope that others see me as someone who loves to create not just art, but create a supportive space for other creatives. I know that not everyone has the support that I have from my family and friends, and I know how important that is to have to succeed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We just recently moved to Fort Worth, so there would be plenty to do out this way for fun! We would first go to the Stockyards and experience it all. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, and of course we would end up at Billy Bob’s. Since my best friend likes to be active, we would pick a good walking/hiking trail, there are plenty around the area. We both enjoy art, so we would make a day of visiting the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carted Museum of American Art. Going downtown Fort Worth during the day and exploring is always fun. We would definitely walk around Sundance Square.
Another must on the list would be to visit the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Though I live in Fort Worth, we would have to drive over to Grapevine and experience the wineries, downtown, and spend a day at Lake Grapevine.
Since we are new to the area, I do not have any specify names of restaurants/shops I want to go to. I do like to try and shop and eat local. Since I love going to thrift shops and antique shops, so those would definitly be on the list.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to several people! My parents have always encouraged me in all that I do. My sisters for their honestly, even when I did not think I needed it, and most of all my husband and my daughter for being my biggest supporters. My husband did not know what he signed up for when he married me. I’ve had the privilege of working with some really great people over the years, but Ginger Durst and Kelly Gunn have been great mentors to me and I have learned so much about business from them. I recently graduated from Wade College, and I had some of the best instructors who taught me a lot.
