We had the good fortune of connecting with Ericka Estrella Chick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ericka, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
This is an excellent question, and so important nowadays, I will say “Think Positive”. In the age of “positivism” “create the life you’ve imagine” upon others, which are Great, Yes! but kind of lacking in the sense that it doesn’t allow for one to truly live consciously, and rather creates an stagnant environment of more and more thought instead of empowering action.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Hmmm don’t know much about what sets me apart from others, but I Love what I do very much and experience immense joy in all aspects of the craft, from learning new techniques, to seeking inspiration on simple things (Like the way the sunlight brightens the coffee cup in the morning) to BTS of movies, chatting with clients and hearing about their ideas, finding locations, color palettes etc. I am most proud of being the Still Photographer for the Feature Film <Bomb City> 2017, it has been (along with a great collection of cinematic projects till this day). One of the greatest experiences of all time! Im going to paraphrase Confucius here a bit and say that when you truly love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work, but rather it becomes part of you, suddenly everything can become “work” and also play! Challenges come in multiple forms, from 2020’s big shift, to life as a whole, it is intrinsic to invest Time and find resources for a strong support system to keep your head up, seek through the <viewfinder> One day at the time you start seeing new possibilities and creative ways of changing and growing with the times!. Commitment is key to keep the energy rolling, from signing up for a class, to buying a new product or developing ideas with what you have in the here and now. The biggest lesson is consistency and intention, if those two are in alignment the rest will come in naturally. To work from the inside out and know that there’s a rhythm to it all, and high pitch isn’t a beautiful melody (wink) What would I like the world to know, that I looove creating moments to stand the test of time!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wooowza okay so this can take so many directions, but here we go lets start with room for spontaneity!, If we are in the DFW I would definitely start by lets go from the airport straight to Downtown, get a drink at the Charles , photograph the city ,wine down at the AT&T art area, go to a show at the Majestic maybe, explore the big city stuff mixed with underground style as well like some good jazz at Paschal’s in Denton, followed by mural and art sighting in the college area of town. Maybe throw in some nature as well and visit some of the many parks our area has to offer, Rockledge offering a great chance to rent some kayaks or take a fancy surfboard yoga session. Coffee coffee and more coffee at the Wild detectives in the Bishops art district. along with more art and music. Maybe some margaritas at Te Deseo and room for the unexpected, like going to the museums of Fort Worth!! or even Dallas Sky Dive!!, there is so much to do and visit, but I think regardless of the order of these, DFW has some pretty amazing things and places to eat and visit!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This can be extensive, so I’ll keep it short, Mom!, I can fill up pages with a story about a camera.but we might run out of time haha! I feel like I will inevitably be leaving someone out so lets keep it at Mom.
