We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Sails and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are a necessary part of life. I realized early on that if I was to become a physician, I would have to risk going against the grain. Historically, the field of medicine was wholly dominated by men. Although there are many female physicians now, it is still a male dominated profession. African-Americans, in a 2019 survey made up only 2.6% of the nation’s doctors. As an African-American female in medicine I knew it would be risky to even try. I accepted the risks and challenges and met them with a fortitude, tenacity and discipline that I didn’t know I had and presevered.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sails Family Medicine is located in Mansfield, TX. I am an affiliate of THMA which has been essential to getting me started and established. I am grateful as a family physician to be thriving in the Mansfield community. I think what sets me apart is my holistic approach to patient care. I seek to listen and understand the whole person–mentally, physically, spiritually and socially in order to have a more effective partnership with my patients in their health journey. I am passionate about people and wellness and seek to educate, motivate, and encourage healthy living.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am truly a health enthusiast and eat a total protein diet so our activities would include eating at Spiral Diner or V eats. Walking or Biking along downtown Dallas. I would go by Klyde Warren Park. I also would visit Northpark for shopping

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to my mentor Dr. Nchekwube who stood by me and encouraged me along my journey. I am very grateful to my husband, Russell and my parents–now deceased who helped support me with prayers, love, and a listening heart. Above all, I give thanks to God. I could not have made it without His guidance.
