We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, how do you think about risk?
Without some form of risk I would not have learned the things that I have learned or had the opportunities to expand in to new territories and have the adventures that I have been fortunate to have. I am not sure I think about the risk involved with things so much as I dive in head first and start making adjustments as I go and I hope for the best. Risk is always a gamble with zero guarantees.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I didn’t start out in music although music has always been a huge part of my life. It was a very round about way getting to where I am now. As a kid I always gravitated to guitars in one way or another. I remember going to grade school with the KISS Destroyer album with me to play at school. Eventually I was able to take some guitar lessons however it wasn’t the kind of music I was hearing as a kid. Eventually I ended up buying the Rik Emmett guitar instruction video and that put me on a much better path. However I still never seemed to be where I wanted to be. I always tried to learn songs from magazines and listening to cassettes over and over trying to replicate what I was hearing. As I pursued music it always seemed that things were out of my price range and to complicate things I simply lived in an area where there was no one playing guitar oriented music. Eventually I went off to community college and I started taking both guitar and piano lessons. That opened up the world of synthesizers to me and I was even more hooked. All the while I always wanted to be an Audio Engineer. There was something about the knobs on the mixing console that got my attention. Due to the way my music life had begun I perceived that I was behind the learning curve of music and so I went on to get a couple of Bachelor degrees. All the while in the back of my head the idea of owning a recording studio lingered in my mind. While I worked in Radiology I continued to practice and write music and then one day my wife mentioned that we need to build the studio that I had always talked about. While I was traveling teaching MRI for G.E. I was planning the studio build. Eventually I went back to working in a hospital which allowed me to break ground on the studio. I don’t think getting to where I am has been easy however I also am not someone who spends a lot of time thinking about the past. I have way to much to accomplish in this life and so forward is my chosen direction.

If there are any lessons that I have learned along the way I would say it is a matter of sticking with things even when you are scared and rest assured I have been scared more than a few times building this studio. In short, if you want it then go after it regardless of what people say.

If there is anything that I would like people to know about me it would be that I am just a normal person that chose to get in the ring and throw down to make something happen. I don’t see myself as someone special. I simply see myself as tenacious and I always look for ways to accomplish my goals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friends to restaurants like Whiskey Cake, Louis Mueller BBQ and Hopdoddy’s. I would take them to 600 Degrees Pizza for (of course) beer and pizza. In short I would show them all the cool local Texas places that we have because truthfully I think I am quite spoiled living where I live and we have the benefit of living in the country and being able to hop in to the city if we want to. Once we have shown them around we always like to show them Texas hospitality by cooking for them at the house. Truth be told my wife is one hell of a cook. I myself enjoy making coffee for people in the morning. For us it’s more about making people feel like they are the most important people in the world…and they always are.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Angelica Meyer was the one who told me that we need to build the studio and do it right.

Dave Del Valle is the person responsible for the studio design and a good amount of the construction.

Anthony Rodriguez and Marc Nirenberg have stood by my side and helped bring this building to life.

Larry and Paula Meyer have supported me and been quick to lend a hand every chance they could.

Glen Hefner took the time to help a nobody and guided us on our way and was instrumental in changing our thought process.

Pat Devaney for always taking the time to teach me about gear, soldering and electronics.

Derek Barghaer and Ken Avant of Vanguard Audio Labs took the time to lend a helping hand to me and make space for me in their world regardless of the phase of construction of the studio.

Ari Garcia of Hotone Audio has always been supportive regardless of the distance (and there is a great physical distance between us) and regardless of the phase in the construction of the studio.

Demetrio Scopelliti and Gianluca Ferro for taking a chance on a complete stranger in the early days and for continuing to support the studio.

The truth is that there are so many people that helped me along the way that without them there is no me and I remain eternally grateful for their help and support.
