We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric McGehearty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I love building; the process of creating something that never existed before. I’m a sculptor as well as a business owner, and both roles allow me to have an idea, set things in motion, and see that idea become a reality. I was a practicing artist and college professor before I started my first business, but there came a point where I wanted to accomplish more, to build something truly bigger than myself. Since that day, over a decade ago, I’ve been passionately striving to build something sustainable that goes well beyond the product of my own labor. With that said, to truly understand my story, it’s important to know that I’m dyslexic. Before I became an entrepreneur, I thought that business required a great deal of reading, and to be honest, that intimidated me. I overcame that hurdle with the support of my wife and family, and even discovered that assistive technology gave me a distinct productivity advantage. I also think my disability gives me a unique insight. Many smart people think they are the best at everything and they struggle to delegate responsibility. that fallacy prevents them from organizing a truly great team. I’ve been able to surround myself with a team of experts that have accelerated our company’s growth.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As an agency, it’s tough to stand out in a crowded marketplace, but Globe Runner’s 11-year track record of client success gives us an edge. That’s not to say it’s always been easy. We’ve had challenges along the way and made our share of mistakes, but I’ve found that if we focus on doing great work for clients we believe in, we can pull through any challenge.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love taking out-of-town friends to some of my local favorites, like PI.E 3.14 Everyday Eatery, an easy walk from my house, and a great place to grab a drink. If we’re near my office in Addison, we might head to Ida Claire, just blocks from my office and my favorite lunch spot. If we’re making a day of sightseeing, I’m always down for a trip to the Perot Museum, followed by a relaxing stroll through The Nasher Sculpture Garden.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Heather had unwavering faith in my ability to start my first business and continues to stand out as my biggest advocate and supporter. When I fail, she picks up the pieces. When I succeed, she helps me keep my head screwed on straight. When I have a big idea, she brainstorms with me, and usually makes my idea even bigger and more audacious. She has encouraged me and motivated me to be my best self in every sense.
