We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmett Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emmett, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since I was in middle school, I had a deep passion for the arts. Hip Hop (specifically battle rap), grabbed my attention in a truly special way. I became almost obsessed with listening to the emcees that I thought were most skilled, free styling for hours and rap battling friends and strangers, and ultimately creating my first songs. Hip Hop gave me an outlet to for my aggression, wit, and desire to connect with others. It also made me more interested in academia. I’m a poet, actor, and educator as well, but the foundation for my love of the arts is rooted in Hip Hop 100%.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve spent nearly 10 years creating art, educating youth, and serving the community in Des Moines,IA. My passion and expertise in the realms of Hip Hop, poetry, theatre, and education made me a hot commodity to partner with in those respective fields. I knew that serving my clients through a business would be the next step up from simple being an independent contractor, so once I found the courage and sought the right guidance, I was able to form Speak Your Peace LLC. The rest is history!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jackie Comito, Iowa State University, Water Rocks! program
She contracted my business for creative art services and recommended me to this platform. I’m truly grateful for her and her colleagues!
