We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started Bold Butterfly in 2020 during the Covid-19 shutdown, mainly as an expressive outlet and something to take my mind away from the fact we couldn’t do anything or go anywhere. During that time my son started what he thinks is a career in video games, some of which require purchases to do certain activities within the game. Well, if you grew up anything like me, you’ve heard the saying, “Money doesn’t grow on trees!” So, one day we sat down together and we came up with this idea to get kids talking about money.

As a child, I always wanted to be a writer. As I got older and the papers for school got longer and longer, I started to lose my passion for writing. After having my children and writing so much for work, the shutdown really showed me that life is short and I should take charge of all my dreams! Fast forward a few months – I established my blog and started writing my first children’s book!

The butterfly comes from a personal love for them, because to me, they represent positive change and hope for a better future. Remembering the butterfly didn’t start that way is a lot like tackling life. Where you start doesn’t necessarily indicate where you will end up and we’re not always sure what that will look like. Bold Butterfly is meant to be a place of empowerment, inspiration, and growth. Whether that be for children learning about how to prepare for their future, a resource for other parents to find helpful tips, or a safe place for a mom to get a bit of motivation in the morning, I want this brand to exude good vibes. If I help just one person along this journey, I consider that a success!

What should our readers know about your business?
Bold Butterly offers writing services such as blog posts for other businesses, review and editing, and poetry requests. We have published two children’s books in the Don’t Count Me Out Series – Understanding Money and Earning & Saving Money. These books are our most prized possessions to date, as the main characters are my children and include little tidbits of their personalities and styles. These kids are my motivation to get up each day, to try harder to show them that anything is possible, and to always follow their dreams.

In 2021, we launched Bold Butterfly Merchandise for Education. Using a portion of the proceeds from our online store sales, we will begin awarding scholarships in 2022 to provide some relief from the financial stress that attending college may create. We are determined to help others succeed while on their journey to success!

As a working mom, I know that finding time to focus on self-care or anything outside of children’s needs may be challenging. That is why it has become more and more important to reach people where they are. Sometimes, just a little giggle can turn someone’s entire day around. If I am the cause of that giggle or smile, I am happy with that. I want this positivity to be contagious; let this be the hereditary trait that my children inherit.

Building this brand has been quite the challenge. Nobody provided a blueprint to follow, nor the topics to discuss. But as the world unfolds in front of us, if we just take a second to breathe and take it all in, we will begin to see what is most important to us. Starting a business definitely teaches a lesson in patience and consistency, but it has also taught me to focus on progress, not perfection, As we continue to grow, we hope to become a household name for years to come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live on the Fort Worth side of the metroplex and have come to love some places I’d considered great. I would definitely take my guest to Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in Grapevine for the porkchop, Gloria’s Latin Cuisine in Southlake for the margaritas of course, and to Oak Street in Roanoke for all the unique dining options with a cute, cozy, small town feel. My family also enjoys the Fort Worth Zoo and Urban Air!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s no secret that I would not be here today if it were not for my mother. One of the first poems I read was one of my mother’s high school poems about the “Roots” movie. That inspired me to not only write, but to also let my creative juices flow and find my voice. She encouraged me to write and even helped me with edits whenever requested. In addition to my mother, I was fortunate to grow up with my grandmother, the sweetest person I will ever meet. One of her famous sayings was, “Be Nice” and this is what motivates me to encourage others. I hope that with Bold Butterfly, I will create a legacy that honors both my mother and grandmother.
