Meet Emily Burke & Jake Sampson: Producers of “Take This To Your Grave” the podcast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Burke & Jake Sampson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily and Jake, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
We are best friends who have always shared an obsession with the more peculiar sides of life. The more taboo, bizarre or macabre, the better. After realizing that our interests aren’t always appropriate topics of discussion in mixed company, we wanted to come up with a way for people to share their darkest secrets without outting themselves. That’s how our podcast “Take This To Your Grave” was born! We designed a website that features an anonymous submission box where anyone can write in their deepest desires or their most embarrassing stories, and then we read the submissions on our show. Our mission is to learn about uncommon interests and to destigmatize weirdness all together, because who among us isn’t a weirdo in some way? With our podcast, we have cultivated a judgement-free space where we can laugh about the uncomfortable parts of being human, and shed some light on topics usually kept in the shadows.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With this being our very first venture into the world of podcasting, learning how to navigate within an entirely new medium was a challenge, but having a new project to latch on to during quarantine has help keep us sane. We hope that anyone else out there who may feel isolated during these times might consider being a part of our goofy show by sending in a secret story. We have enjoyed showing the world that everybody has a secret, and talking about it can really bring us together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love Deep Ellum! When the world gets back to normal, and when going out for drinks isn’t hazardous, we would definitely recommend this part of Dallas. It’s a really cool neighborhood in Dallas that hosts amazing local musicians, in a really cool atmosphere. We love to bar hop this area- there is always something interesting to see!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The success of our podcast is entirely owed to those brave enough to write in their secrets to be shared with our listeners.
