We had the good fortune of connecting with Emil Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emil, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My name is Emil L. Cole owner of EMILCOLESTUDIOS photography and digital media. I am originally from Jackson Mississippi and I started doing photography about 10 years ago. I started shooting in highschool as the yearbook photographer. People would always ask me to take photos of them and after a couple of cameras as gifts, one of my friends decided to pay me to take photos for her boutique and magazine. From there EmilColeStudios was born. Since then Ive dabbled in every type of photography but because of my unique beginning I always gravitated towards Fashion and Editorial photography. My background has been the foundation of my career as a photographer. That combined with the fact that my mother is a Dance instructor/former Pageant Queen/Teacher/Event Coordinator. Ive always been in enviroments with beautiful, intelligent, creative, stylish, female energy. Throughout my days in college at Jackson State University I worked on many project with the Drama department, Athletics department, and College of Liberal arts. Ive been in the Dallas area for 3 years now and my experiences here have taught me so many lessons. Ive been amazed at the opportunities and hospitality Ive discovered here! I think the unique combination of experiences, opportunities, and upbringing greatly influence any artist and moving to the DFW is a great decision for any creative type.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Im all about the natural form. Ive always enjoyed catching the off-guard moments because they demonstrate true reactions and natural body language. I do enjoy doing event/behind the scenes photography for that specific reason. Even in my studio shoots I like to think I can make highly fashionale images without “over doing it”. I believe in the models ability to convey sexy, angry, playful without having to present them naked or barely clothed. If anything has set me apart from other photographers it would be my editing skills. I can spend hours at the editing board and turn insignificant b-roll frames into beautiful images because im willing to invest hours into making a photo look perfect. I can apply retouching methods that remove tattoos, scars, and blemishes if my client would like.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would personally like to give a shoutout to the Boutique Owners, Make-Up Artists, Hair Stylists, and Designers that make amazing things happen every day! Ive had the pleasure of working with so many great production people that when given the opportunity, seem to make magical things happen. As a photographer I capture energy, moments, perspectives but there are people that actually build the subject and the enviroment. Without them there wouldnt be anyone pushing the limits.
