We had the good fortune of connecting with Eliot Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eliot, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always enjoyed learning how to do new things that allow me to create something. I’ve been a musician my entire life and learned to play the drums at 8 years old and my background is in music performance/education. I loved using this skill to produce music on my own and as a creative outlet. I was first introduced to photography when I saw the pictures from my brother’s wedding. I couldn’t believe someone could create such true to life and vibrant photos with just a camera. This led to my new fascination with modern cameras and quickly developed into a hobby. My friends and family started asking for professional photos for fun and this naturally lead to a business endeavor. Thus, EMJ Digital Arts was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always pushed myself to always do my absolute best when it came to my professional life and career. I have been a music teacher, audio recording intern, the Showband drummer on a cruise ship, passed three financial exams to become a stock broker, and now I am currently pursuing a career in technology as a full-stack web developer. My career is very important to me, and I have been striving to find one that suits my strengths, personality, and passions best. It hasn’t been easy work and I have had a wild journey with different jobs, but it has been so worth it. I have grown as a person and learned more about myself because of it. Through this journey, I have found a few consistent things to be true: I am a die-hard creative, I love to learn, technology fascinates me, and music is my life. My advice to anyone is don’t settle just because you’re scared, you just might find that what scares you is what could save your life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My first choice for dinner would be sushi. Blue Sushi is one of my favorite places and provides options for everyone (vegans too!). Before marriage, I was never into theater, but my wife has introduced me to this realm of the arts. I would recommend finding either a local theater, whether that is the Artisan in Bedford or something bigger like the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas or Stage West in Fort Worth and see what’s on stage. Every performance I’ve seen so far has been awesome and a new experience. I also love rollercoasters and escape rooms. Six Flags or an escape room would definitely be on the list. I personally love activity based events whether that’s playing a Jackbox game at home with friends or going to Whirlyball.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and support of my wife, my family, and most importantly, God. My parents are very small business minded and my mom was an instrumental person in helping me establish my business and assisting me. Once I married my wife, Shannon, she stepped right in and took over all of the business tasks outside of the picture taking and editing. Although EMJ Digital Arts is named after me and the pictures are completed by me, this business wouldn’t be what it is without the support and help from my family. God has blessed me with a creative mind and abilities that allow me to do what I do and I will never take that for granted.
