We had the good fortune of connecting with Eden Harlan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eden, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Pretty Eden on a mission to help young ladies like myself feel more confident and comfortable in their skin. I also wanted them to know that no matter what they face, there is always room for growth and elevation. Each product developed for the Pretty Eden brand is purposefully created to provide the beauty transformation experience every customer deserves. I wanted the products to be all-natural because it is important to me that each lady understands they deserve the best ingredients on the market.
The Butterfly is a symbol of resurrection, life, endurance, and change.
I chose the butterfly to be a symbol of “Pretty Eden” to inspire transforming thoughts and feelings of the beauty industry and society. I want every Pretty Eden customer to see what true beauty is and what it looks like. I believe I can give your inner beauty new life with “Pretty Eden”.
My beauty line embodies My message: “Do Not Be Afraid To Fly.”
What should our readers know about your business?
The vision for Pretty Eden started when I was in the 8th grade, I used that entire year to research the products I wanted to use and how I wanted to sell my products. When I officially launched my business it was not easy because I was starting my freshman year in high school and we were still in a pandemic. I could not promote my business the way I wanted because we were stuck in the house. I also had to balance school online and really wanting to see my friends. My business was online only so I had to learn how to promote on Facebook and Instagram. I thought growing my business would be different. I was discouraged, but my mom and dad kept encouraging me and helping me in every way. During my tenth grade year, I had to balance my business, high school, and college. I admit I was overwhelmed. My business took a backseat. Now I am learning to balance more because I know my products are the best. I have received so much positive feedback about my products. I have customers coming to the vending events to look for me. My online presence is increasing. I am the brand and I know I have to operate at my highest potential so I can help every customer operate at their highest potential. It took a lot of self-talk, meditation, and praying.
Pretty Eden’s products are different from others because I knew what I didn’t like about other products and I fixed it. My lipgloss is not sticky and super thick. It has a sleek moisturizing texture. My lip gloss, body wash, lotion, and scrubs are infused with natural oils to promote healthy skin and moisture. I created products that are all-natural and healthy. I want to make sure every person has the best customer experience and healthy skin.
I’ve learned that you have to believe in yourself before anyone else. I also learned that you have to look at the bigger picture and not just what you see right now. Pretty Eden is on the rise and I am determined to put a mark on the beauty industry.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had to plan a week-long trip in the city, I would book The Extraordinary Treehouse in Little Forest Hills Airbnb for our stay. For our activities, I would plan for us to have a picnic and paint day in the Trinity Grove Art Park, a fun day at Andretti’s in the Colony, and enjoy killing zombies at Zero Latency in Addison. I love burgers, so we would definitely visit Kincaid’s in Arlington or Chapps in Cedar Hill. I would book horseback riding for relaxation. I love movies so, movie night is a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, my success has been influenced by people who care about seeing my brand grow and seeing me grow as a teenager. My parents, Ethan & La’Donna Harlan, helped my business flourish by assisting me financially, spiritually, and emotionally. They believed in me and allowed me to create my own path. I also want to shout out to Ms. Latoya Shelby for taking a chance on me and believing in my business even when I didn’t. She gave me my first table at a vending event. She encouraged me to introduce my business to the vending market on weekends, and I gained new customers and more confidence. My little siblings, Ean & Elyce, help me when I am vending, and they inspire me to be my best self, so they can have someone to look up to. My grandmother, Earnestine Shankle, inspired the “Steenie Butterfly” lipgloss because she is a breast cancer survivor, and I wanted to celebrate her strength with my customers. Lastly, my papa, Donald Shankle, inspired me to be true to myself. He is watching over me now, but his presence always lets me know I am on the right track.
