We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Burks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business during the pandemic was an opportunity to bring some positivity into a challenging time. Self-care and wellness were paramount for me, and I wanted to align my business with these values. I saw a gap in the market for a subscription box concept that centered around candles, which hadn’t been widely explored. This idea not only allowed me to solve a problem but also resonated with my love for subscription models. Beyond just selling products, I aimed to create a social experience where people could come together to celebrate and uplift one another.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Golden Blk Candle Lounge apart is our commitment to creating more than just home fragrance products. We pride ourselves on being a vibrant community hub. Beyond our candle making workshops, we host a variety of standalone events throughout the week, including networking sessions, open mic nights, live music, poetry spoken word, dinner parties, talk sessions with a therapist, and monthly art exhibitions. Our aim is to provide a safe space where the community can feel seen, heard, and protected—a place where people can come together to create and build meaningful connections.

I’m incredibly proud of the supportive community we’ve built and the diverse experiences we offer. This journey hasn’t always been easy. It has been filled with challenges, but it has also been serendipitous, thanks to the unwavering support, mentorship, and love from my friends and family. Their belief in me has been a source of strength and has opened doors for my business to thrive.

Overcoming challenges has taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the power of a strong support network. I’ve learned that believing in your vision, staying true to your values, and fostering a sense of community can turn obstacles into opportunities.

I want the world to know that Golden Blk Candle Lounge is more than a candle lounge; it’s a testament to the strength of community and the magic that happens when people come together to support and uplift one another. We are dedicated to creating a space where everyone can feel valued and inspired.
