We had the good fortune of connecting with Duncan Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Duncan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was always a band dude who happened to be good with technology, so I started working in multimedia in the early 90s (right after high school) to pay for my drumming habit.
My web design skills in the burgeoning dot-com era afforded me flexible, well paying jobs that I could do from anywhere – and so I could stay on tour with my bands and also pay my bills.
My dumb luck and experience in web design/development and multimedia led me to work with major clients like Interscope Records, Warner Brothers, and Hachette Filipacchi Media, where I gained a strong foundation and deep understanding of what drives successful digital content and user engagement.
I started Black New Media when I moved back to Dallas from years in Los Angeles. I saw clear opportunities here in my hometown where I could merge my interests in music + technology + creative collaboration to build something impactful and lasting that would benefit the community that’s been so good to me.
With Bishop Manor Rehearsal, I wanted to offer more than just a rental space—I wanted to use my years in the music industry to give touring and local artists what they need to succeed, and to create a resource that supports the Dallas music community.
What should our readers know about your business?
I owe a lot to the Dallas music and art community, which has been such a big part of my life and career. From the musicians who’ve trusted me with their rehearsal spaces at Bishop Manor, to the collaborators and clients who’ve worked with me through Black New Media, this INCREDIBLE community has been an endless source of creativity and connection. I’m so grateful for the relationships I’ve built here.
What sets my businesses apart is the deep understanding of the industries I serve.
With Black New Media, I don’t just build websites—I create tools that empower businesses and artists to grow, connect, and succeed. For Bishop Manor Rehearsal, it’s not just about offering rehearsal spaces; it’s about building a community and providing a reliable, supportive environment for musicians to hone their craft.
I’m very proud of the relationships I’ve built along the way. Working with incredible clients and artists, seeing their projects succeed, and knowing I played a part in their journey is incredibly fulfilling.
You asked what i would want people to know about my business and story – and the answer to that is everything I do is driven by passion. I believe in the power of creativity to connect people, tell stories, and inspire change. Whether it’s through a cool website, a compelling video, or a rehearsal space where musicians feel at home, I’m committed to creating things that make a meaningful impact.
Ultimately, what I do is about blending creativity and technology to build tools and spaces that support others in pursuing their dreams. I’m excited to keep growing, collaborating, and finding new ways to make a difference.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, we would obviously spend a lot of time in Deep Ellum. Working and playing there have been a huge part of my life. There are a lot of great places for live music – Trees, 3 Links and Doublewide for sure.
I spend a lot of time walking White Rock Lake. It is a beautiful spot right in the middle of Dallas.
For food and a good hang Goodfriend and Fortunate Son are probably my favorites, but this city is so full of some the best food, music, and art around.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a lot to the Dallas music and art community, which has been such a big part of my life and career. From the musicians who’ve trusted me with their rehearsal spaces at Bishop Manor to the collaborators and clients who’ve worked with me through Black New Media, this community has been an endless source of creativity and connection. I’m so grateful for the relationships I’ve built here.
