Meet Drew Skyland | Author & Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Skyland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drew, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The one thing about the fashion industry that a lot of people are unaware of is the social aspect of fashion.

I think when people see models in magazines or clothes on the runway, they just see the final product.

They don’t see the countless effort to get your name out there through media interviews, social events, and being always in comparison.. While simultaneously, creating the future of fashion and always performing new aesthetics through a creative lens

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is fashion and I specialize in bohemian clothing. My brand is unisex so all sexes and genders are more than welcome to shop on my e-commerce stores.

My ability to construct feminine fashion into being for everyone is what sets me apart. Regardless, if you are a petite woman or a scraggly man; you should feel comfortable in being in your own femininity.

Personally, I had trouble with connecting to my femininity. I think that is why I truly made Drew Skyland. Drew Skyland was a coping mechanism for me to embrace my feminine energy instead of being shamed by it. My whole life people have judged me for being too fem or girly and not fitting this ideal “black male” stereotype. I don’t really care for it, I just want to be myself. I just want to be happy. And, I want others to know they are not alone in this. Embracing yourself is the best freedom a person can have.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would love to show my best friend around!

I don’t know shops off the top of my head, but I do know exactly what I would plan.

On the day of their arrival, I would take them into the city and hit up a Korean BBQ joint. Those are great for easy table talk and conversation. Plus, after the plane ride they must be super hungry!

Throughout the week,

I would take them to the galleria mall just to see what mainstream fashion is presented, a nail salon to get our nails done, a spa retreat center (spa castle, If there is one close), a ramen bar, a winery/brewery (they can make that choice), a pub/bar, a night club, and maybe catch a yoga or Pilates class. But, not before we got our smoothies from a smoothie bar!

The places most interesting to me are those where I can openly interact with you. Bars and nightclubs are more for socializing, but in my opinion not as personal.

A yoga class, a cute picnic at the park, a run to the river, a relaxing talk at the coffee shop is what I find really enjoyable to connect.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely would have to give thanks to God. God has always assisted me in my journey to become a fashion designer, and I am very grateful for everything I’ve accomplished and will in the future.

Also, I love all the people I have encountered in my life to get where I needed to be. Even the bad ones, haha.

My friends in college have been a true stepping stone in not just evolving myself in the fashion world, but in my personal world as well. They have pushed me out of my comfort zone creatively, retrospectively, and to see that my dream in becoming a fashion designer is attainable.
