We had the good fortune of connecting with Draylin Byrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Draylin, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
One of the most important things that I’ve learned about this career is time and patience. I’ve learned that there’s really no rush to make it to the top charts, and there is no time frame to get things done. By taking the time to carefully make something the way I want it to be, and the way I want people to see it as, makes it so much better. If I were to rush my projects, I’d be getting nowhere. All the projects would sound choppy, and would be very unenjoyable to listen to.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe what sets me apart from other people in the music industry, is my adaptability to different genres. I’m always experimenting with different styles of music. I don’t want to be known as an artist that only does Hip-Hop, so I’ve expanded into Pop, Alternative, R&B, and in a way Rock. None of it was easy to accomplish. To think of something to write about without it being repetitive isn’t easy. I say this because, once a certain song blows up, it shows what type of music people like and/or want. I got where I am today by finding people who are into the same things I’m into. Sure, we may have different ways of achieving our goals, but our motives are pretty similar. By keeping the people I’ve met close to me, they’ve helped me realize what I need to work on. They keep it real with me constantly, and won’t be ‘yes men.’ If something isn’t right, they let me know, and I fix it.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and remember; it’s that I will NEVER be known for only one thing. I will NEVER give up, even if it seems like the only option. I don’t give in to any-one person or thing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, the area I live in doesn’t have a lot to look at, but if we were to go a few hours out of town then I can show them EVERYTHING. We’d visit lots of historical landmarks, so they can get an idea of how the land became what it is. We’d go out to play laser tag, escape rooms, arcades, and maybe even paintball. With tons of activities comes a lot of places to eat at as well. There are tons of diverse restaurants to eat at in my area. We have Thai foods, Japanese foods, Mexican/Hispanic foods, Indian Foods, and even seafood. It won’t matter where you come from. If you crave it, we got it. I’d say maybe, two days before they had to leave, we’d go out to see a concert or watch movies. Walk the city. If there’s one thing I want them to remember before leaving, it’s that we always have something fun to do.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take the time to shout out these people. Without them, I don’t think that I would be where I am today. My good friends, 4R05T, Huferko and Hi-keif The Kitchen Ninja. These people have given me faith, and given me so much motivation within this career. They believe that I can, and will be a successful music artist. Hi-keif used to be a mentor of mine a few years back, and I still recall the times when he’d enjoy reading my poems. In fact, it was him specifically that made me want to pursue a career in music. There are other people who have helped me along the way as well such as; Lil’Crestfallen, and Mr. PancakeMan. We may not be as close, but regardless I’d like to thank them for being there for me.
