We had the good fortune of connecting with Drako Tyshawn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drako, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After COVID, the world had changed and I feel like we got exposed to how many people had their own business while also experiencing the pros and cons of running an entity. For me, I was curious about the lifestyle. It was so glamorized on social media, and I personally was in a space of needing more passion in my life. One morning, I woke up and decided I was going to find which talent would make me some money, and not just any money, but legal money that generated wealth. From that decision, I impulsively quit all my jobs and started my journey seeking what would be that abundant creation.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My brand is named Drako’s Laboratory. I service people by doing their hair. I started out trying to braid hair but the process I was taking was entirely too long so I had to change directions. That direction led me into locking hair, or really just maintaining them for others. The goal for my business is to expand into selling products such as strip eyelashes, clothes, and beauty bars for the hair and skin — you know a #allthingsbeauty type vibe. My business mission is about helping others feel like and be their best self whether that’s physically, spiritually, or both; and I do that through my conversation and supplying them their desired hair service. I believe the keynote that sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I am very passionate about delivering my people the look they’re going for, but I do believe this goes beyond my service. My character as a person is very reliable, kind, gentle, and understanding and I believe people chose me because they’re inspired by those qualities. I am so excited to see where Drako’s Laboratory is a year from now, a lot because I truly am working, living, and walking by blind faith in myself and God’s path. I feel like I am most proud of my success as far as all I have accomplished, in such a short amount of time. I had always done my own hair because my Grandmother (Rest her Soul) had instilled in me that a woman should always embrace her natural beauty. So, when I first started doing other people’s hair, my confidence was so shallow and then I found out I was pregnant. Finding out I was pregnant brought on a lot of anxiety because I knew in my mind and heart, I had told God I wasn’t going back to work, but I was fully aware of the fact I had NO CLIENTS, at least nothing consistent. I went ahead and signed up to substitute at my Alma Mater and did hair in the evenings, as people requested. Around November 2022 my bookings went cold and so I took that time to focus on the substituting position, and I came back full-time with hair in May 2023. Still in May I felt so insecure because my baby would cry so much and so loud, and honestly, I’m still not used to it, but I have my beliefs on what’s truly going on. But anyway, once June 2023 hit, I hit a dry spell within my bookings, and it felt like a test of my faith; but I stood firm on the belief God heard my prayers. Now, I’ve been consistently booked since July 2023, and I know I have found the path that can lead me to my vision of generational wealth.
This journey has not been easy by any means, and I should take more pride in my level of perseverance, but we value humbleness round here. For me, the greatest challenge is trying to maintain professionalism with one’s most authentic presentation of self. This is a great challenge for me because I am not one who believes in putting boundaries on individuals. I find more value in observing actions of individuals to see what their character or heart truly inhabits and then I adjust myself accordingly. Nevertheless, since adding my boundaries, I believe I am gaining a more genuine clientele to serve. What do I mean by genuine? These are people who respect my work and my being, meaning they make a conscious effort to act within the “Rules and Regulations” I have put into place. This has been showing me not to be afraid to ask for what I deserve or desire, and it’s also been aligning me to my authentic self-expression. Again, there’s nothing easy about this journey but there’s everything to learn. If you can allow yourself to remain open to the knowledge at hand, you’ll always feel gratitude about your journey. And I believe that is most important for your journey and sanity in this life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being I am from Waco, we truly don’t have many tourist sites but there’s enough to explore. For example, I’ve yet to fully visit the Downtown Jungle of Magnolia and I know that’s one hotspot to explore. I’ve heard great things about their food and I have had the opportunity to drink a little coffee in a Brewery they have there. I love water, although I don’t classify myself as a fish, but I know we recently had a Camp-style waterpark open; so that’s something we could spend a night or two at. I love a good workout, so I’d have us do a morning walk through Cameron Park, I’ve found it to be so peaceful being able to walk alongside the river. I’m not a big cooker so we’d definitely have to sit at a restaurant. The most unique restaurant we have is called George’s. I’d take my guest there for a cold margarita and some good appetizers, they have these bacon wrapped chicken balls called Crazy Wings and they are so delicious. I’d top the visit off with a trip to the Downtown phenomon Club 5ive and The Hangover because of the fairly priced drinks but I also enjoy the scenery of the venues. I’m truly a very chill person so I’d also be open to creating activities in the house. You know, some wine and music or wine and a arts and crafts session. The simple things in life bring me the most pleasure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The BIGGEST shoutout goes to the God, my Lord and Savior and the Heavenly Father, because my belief in that power is sincerely what keeps me pushing. Next, I’d shout myself out. I love that I have not given up on myself while on this journey. I’ll never forgot the moment(s) when I had no idea what I was doing or trying to accomplish, but I really chose to stand firm on my vision of working for myself. Lastly, I’d shoutout and thank my supporters, My Glocksters, because they make it possible for me to not only provide for my child, but to serve God’s creation.
