Meet Dr. Relius Johnson | Higher Ed Professional & College Access Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Relius Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Relius, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting Geaux D.R.E.A.M. was a deeply personal and purpose-driven decision rooted in my own collegiate experience during undergrad. Having had to navigate the intricate process of pursuing higher education and striving to graduate debt-free, I recognized the challenges that many students, particularly those of color, face in accessing resources and support. My motivation stems from the realization that the system isn’t always equitable, especially when it comes to students who look like me. Drawing from my background as a higher education professional, I’ve gained insights into the disparities within the application process, financial aid packages, and overall navigation of the system. This firsthand understanding inspired me to establish Geaux D.R.E.A.M. with the goal of empowering high school students to attend the college of their choice and obtain grants and scholarships. My ultimate vision is to guide students of color through a process that not only facilitates their access to higher education but also ensures they graduate debt-free with their undergraduate degrees. By leveraging my experiences, I aim to bridge the gap and provide valuable support to those who may not traditionally have early access to the best packages and resources. Geaux D.R.E.A.M. is not just a business; it’s a commitment to fostering educational equity and empowering the next generation of diverse leaders.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of education and a commitment to making a positive impact in the field of higher education. Currently, I am on the path to earning an MBA with a minor in Corporate Management from Texas A&M University Commerce, set to graduate in August 2024. I hold a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Research from LSU (May 2022), an MA in Applied Research, Measurement & Evaluation (May 2020), an MS in College Student Personnel Services and Administration from the University of Central Arkansas (May 2018), and a BS in Education from Texas A&M University Commerce (August 2016).
Professionally, I have served in various roles that have allowed me to contribute to the educational landscape. Currently, as the Director of Orientation at UTA since April 2022, I am responsible for shaping the onboarding experience for new students. Prior to this, I held the role of Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs at UTA from May 2020 to July 2022. My experiences also include serving as a Coordinator of Residence Life at LSU (June 2018 to March 2020) and as a Residence Life Coordinator at the University of Central Arkansas (June 2016 to May 2018). Undoubtedly, my journey has not been without its challenges, particularly as a Black man navigating spaces where representation is often lacking. Despite facing questions and challenges related to my terminal degree, I find the pursuit worthwhile because of the impact and positive change I am able to create within the education system.
Overcoming these challenges is an ongoing process, but I am fortunate to have built an amazing support system. My village, comprised of mentors, colleagues, and friends, provides the strength and encouragement needed to navigate hurdles and continue advocating for change. This support has been crucial in allowing me to show up, be present, and do the impactful work that I am passionate about. One key message I want the world to know is that there are financial resources available for higher education, and the key is to start early. My journey reflects the importance of education and the possibilities that open up when one is equipped with knowledge and determination. Through my experiences, I aim to inspire others to pursue their educational goals and to believe in the transformative power of education.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit, I’d plan a week full of memorable experiences in the area. We’d start with breakfast at a cozy local spot, maybe known for its delicious pancakes or a unique brunch experience. The day would continue with a visit to Docks Bookshop, where we’d explore hidden literary treasures and immerse ourselves in the world of books. In the evening, we’d head to the Free Man or Bar Louie for live music, good company, and a vibrant atmosphere. The following day would focus on cultural exploration, from local farmers’ markets to events celebrating Black culture. A day trip to Baton Rouge would follow, filled with historical sites, museum visits, and culinary delights. We’d take a day of relaxation, perhaps in a nearby park, and conclude the week with a cooking session at home. Spirits and a night out at a distillery or whiskey bar would be on the agenda, complemented by exploring diverse eateries and culinary adventures. The farewell would involve brunch at a unique spot, reminiscing about the week’s adventures and possibly ending with a creative twist, such as a painting class or a live performance. Throughout the week, the focus would be on good food, cultural exploration, and creating lasting memories for an unforgettable visit.
