We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Nikki Berner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Nikki, how does your business help the community?
In my local community, and even my online community, I wanted to be able to shine a light on pelvic health conditions to not only normalize the discussion but also let women know that there is help out there. Women’s health, especially pelvic health, is an extremely under served, under treated, and under diagnosed area of healthcare. Pelvic health conditions, like incontinence, painful intercourse, chronic pelvic pain, are extremely personal and sensitive topics that aren’t openly discussed. This contributes to the pattern of under diagnosing and under treating. I believe that the more we can speak freely about pelvic health conditions, we can begin to remove the stigma associated, empower women to seek treatment, and help them heal. My hope is that this becomes a ripple effect, extending far beyond me and my local community.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own The Fem Method Pelvic Health which provides pelvic floor physical therapy to women suffering with a variety of pelvic floor conditions such as leaking, painful intercourse, and pelvic pain, as well as conditions that arise during pregnancy and postpartum such as low back pain and diastasis recti. My goal is to help women find lasting relief to these conditions through a wholistic, functional and individualized approach so that they may remain active through all phases of life. I believe my intentional and methodical treatment approach allows women to connect with their bodies to heal and experience lasting relief. My experience from working in a variety of clinical settings, and personal experience as a Division 1 athlete, all contribute to the unique lens that I view my patients through.
The road to opening my own practice was a windy one. I was feeling a deep drive for career growth that was unfortunately not happening at my previous position. I had always been drawn to the idea of entrepreneurship but was never positive it was the right route for me to take. Once I truly sat down and created a business plan, all the pieces came together and it was full steam ahead. I organically transitioned out of my previous position over a 9 month span and then took the leap to go full time. With the help of my mentors, I realized that I would only be stunting the growth of my business by spreading myself thin across two jobs. Once I committed full time to my business, it grew more and more each month. Getting over that initial fear is so much easier said than done. I really clung to my beliefs that I was setting out to provide exceptional care to others and trusted in the process that lead me there.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I absolutely love Mule Alley down in the Stockyards so I would kick off there. Stop number 1 would be drinks at The Drover Hotel then head to La Paloma for dinner (and margs!). After that, take a stroll around the stockyards before we head to Cadillacs for some two-stepping! For some weekday exploring, I would head to Press Café in Clearfork then hit up some of the awesome shopping. Otherwise, spending time in our local community in Aledo walking on the trails or sipping some cold beer at Parker County Ice House sounds like time well spent!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Aside from my amazing family and friends who believed in me to start my own private practice, I am also fortunate to have amazing mentors in Jesse and Nicole Cozean and an outstanding pelvic health mentorship group that truly believes in rising together to elevate patient care and change the game in pelvic health. Their guidance and support has truly been monumental in my personal, professional, and business growth.
