We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorie Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
On June 21, 2011 I lost my sweet 45 day old son, Kale. Within 4 weeks, I discovered I was pregnant again. Anxiety riddled me as I feared doing absolutely anything that would risk the life I was growing. My friend was selling a sewing machine for $20 she never used, and the rest is truly history. The first few months before the business started, it was just me, the machine and a belly kicking as the desk in front of me vibrated from the machine. It wasn’t until after successfully bringing that sweet life Earth side that I realized just what that sewing machine meant to me, and what it could bring me. Within months, I had friends and family begging me to make them their own baby gifts. By 2014, my CPA mom told me I’d have to go file for a business license because this was no longer just a hobby. I still remember how proud I was holding that DBA that said “The Baby Bird Boutique” and knowing “Baby Bird” was to remember my sweet Kale.
It wasn’t until 2016 when I felt more confident to play with fashion that I invented the v-neck romper.
The rest is history.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel like my business fell in my lap-or bumped against my belly. It grew from a distraction into a passion into a demand.
The road to success is paved by you, so everyone’s has a unique destination and scenery.
I knew going in, the integrity of my business would be to spread my son’s story as far and wide as possible. I am so proud to share him with the world and spread kindness in his honor. #DoIt4Kale
I’ve learned that your story IS the business. The more YOU that you share with your audience, the more they’ll flock to you.
People can shop anywhere, but when they know the human behind that piece they’re buying, suddenly it’s a story and an experience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Any time I have an out of town friend staying with me, I always take them to Blue Mesa, non-negotiable. If it’s a girls weekend and we have time, I take them to Studio 80 for a unique night out.
If any of my friends are movie fans, I spend the next day showing them Burger’s Lake, Kincaids and then finishing the night at McFly’s.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When you’re starting a small business, it can seem so hard to put yourself out there. You feel like a burden to friends and family asking them to share or how you can space out asking for support.
For me, my very first customer and biggest supporter to this day is my friend of 20 years, Megan Fannin.
She had so much faith in me that even when the products weren’t perfect, she was first in line with her card ready and a shout out every single time.
Without her, there would be know Baby Bird Boutique.
