We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have been a risk taker my entire life. Mainly because my mother really created an environment that made me feel safe if I fell flat on my face. I always knew she had my back and that is I believe the foundation of taking risk. Knowing if you fail it’s okay. As I got older that peace came from faith in God. Risk taking is a talent I believe because you have to know when a risk makes sense. Risk and faith work hand and hand once you have done all you can to stack the odds in your favor ie hard work and research you have to just do it! As you get older and have more responsibility such as myself with my daughter you are more careful about taking risk because you have more to loose and if you fail it effects more than just you.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the creator and owner of Jam Box Fitness & Events and most recently opened up DAQ’s Luxury Daiquiri Lounge with my husband.

Jam Box was created when traveling to 6-7 locations across the city hosting satellite fitness classes and renting space from other gyms became unhealthy for me as a mom. I needed to be more stationary and in one place.

The opportunity to open my own studio came along and I jumped on it. I had about 200 members across the city before I opened a brick & mortar studio.

My background was in event planning and throwing parties before I got into fitness so I decided to join the two together and create a space that didn’t feel like a normal gym and that could double as a space for private events. After all working out should be one big party!!

The first location was a huge success so I opened up a second location two years later close to home. The fitness side was a little more challenging this time as I had to create members from scratch and I selected a space that was extremely expensive which was a mistake.

I learned a valuable lesson. Whatever worked the first time try to replicate the same deal within 20-30%. I almost tripled my rent at my second location.

A few years later I opened up a Dallas location and although the pandemic hit 6 months after we opened it has still been successful thanks to the business model. Because we don’t just do fitness or just do events we are able to maximize revenue when one side is lacking. So I highly suggest when it makes sense to make sure you are getting the most out of your business model so that all your eggs are not in one basket, however you also don’t want to look like you are doing too much and not focused on one or two things.

During the pandemic my husband and I created DAQ’s, the first luxury daiquiri lounge in Plano/Frisco. We have been open for about 3 months and we have been overwhelmed by the support and success. The pandemic gave us free time so we decided to pull the trigger on something we had been brainstorming about over the last ten years!

In a nutshell I’m still in the risk taking business but not blindly. I always consider what if this doesn’t work out what are the consequences instead of assuming it will work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give my credit to my mom! The idea that I can do anything started from home. She also made sure she exposed me to so many things by involving me in programs and organizations and that’s where the inspiration to do big things came from. I never worried about necessities she worked 2 and 3 jobs to make sure that wasn’t a distraction and the cost to enroll in a program was never an issue because my mom would always get us a scholarship or grant she had a way of making things happen and that is exactly where I get it from!
