We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Crawford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My original thought process behind starting my own business began in high school and at that time I was searching for what I could start as a brand that could allow me to one day be able to give back to my community. It was not until my freshman year of college during my schools’ homecoming to where I began to become inspired when I DJ’ed for the first time. From that day I went and purchased my first pair of turntables and my mentor, and now considered brother, helped show me how to truly DJ, and from there I fell in love with it. From there I began to DJ until I graduated and moved back home to Dallas and started working in a school district and one of my tasks was to help maintain my campus website page and we didn’t have too many pictures to post so I decided to purchase my first camera and start taking photos so our students could have memories to look back on. As time went on I thought to myself why not combine the two and create a media company. So in 2020, I started Dominique Crawford Productions which is a company that offers both photography and DJ services.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dominique Crawford Productions is a Black-Owned media company that offers DJ and photography services and we are currently serving the DFW area. I believe what sets us apart from other media services is our goal. For us, our goal is to give our clients an experience that when the day is over they leave feeling amazing and looking amazing. For me, I feel blessed and excited when I receive a new booking. I especially feel excited when a new booking comes in and they mention that they were referred by a previous client. That means to me that I reached a major goal for my business and now I am able to showcase my skills to a new face to hopefully have them come back as a returning client. I got to where I am today by pushing myself and just putting myself out there. With a company of one, it has not been an easy process but with the help of all of my supporters and the very amazing comments left by my clients after bookings, I keep pushing myself to build my business stronger. I have learned that by being patient and maintaining self-care, I can build a strong brand to give to the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During the day I would suggest going to get something to eat from places in the Highlands in Arlington or going to Main Event if you like to bowl and feel that you are good enough to beat your friends. For the nightlife, I would say downtown Dallas would be the place to be whether going to the Trinity Grove area or the Deep Ellum area. I feel that both locations have many things to offer to just hang out with friends and also family when they come into town, There are so many things to do in Dallas that to me you’ll never be able to do everything or think of all that you can do while your visiting.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to first dedicate this story to my biggest supports being my mom and my girlfriend, Lisa Crawford and Keanna Kelly, who have been my two biggest supporters since I started putting everything together. I would like to dedicate this also to the rest of my family and friends who have supported me and helped spread my name around. I would like to give a big shout-out and thank you to my mentor Jordan Jones in Little Rock, AR who saw potential in me and helped me become the DJ that I am today and still supports me to this day. Lastly, I would like to dedicate this story to every last client that I have had. Whether you listened to a mix that I made, purchased a picture, or simply just booked me to DJ and photograph an event for you. I could not have been able to grow in my business without you all.
