Meet DJ Kelly J | DJ, Entrepreneur & Influencer

We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Kelly J and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m definitely a no risk, no reward kind of person; I don’t think I’d be anywhere near where I am so far if I played it safe everytime, even when it came to following the rules lol.
I walked through most doors I saw open, if it led to a goal of mine, even if I wasn’t exactly ready. I always felt like I wouldn’t get the opportunity again if I didn’t, and it worked out in my benefit most times making myself “ready” for whenever a door was open.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most people think of DJing as this fun and visually easy thing to do, and although it is a ton of fun, there’s a level of understanding you have to have with people to make it a career.
I’ve always loved people, and used music to help them. Either with weddings, radio, nightlife, private events, or community events, I use music to create memorable experiences for people.
I’ve experienced a lot of challenges over the last 13 years and still do honestly, but my mindset shifted over time. I don’t think anybody really has it “easy” but some people learn how to look as life’s challenges as opportunities to prevail vs burdens that only exist in their lives. Anything worth having isn’t easy to get, and I believe that the DJs that have lasted the test of time have truly given their all in their avenues.
I would want the world to know that I’m doing the same; giving it my all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Funny thing about that; my best friend since I was 9 lives in Detroit and she’s coming to Vegas for the first time this summer. So! This is gonna be pretty realistic lol.
Fresh off the airport, she has to hit a slot machine in the airport lol. Then we gotta go to the Las Vegas sign to take pics, and immediately head to Fat Tuesdays! Gotta walk the strip til our drink is gone, then maybe head downtown to eat; there are some really great restaurants in downtown Las Vegas. That might be it for the day unless I gotta work, in which she has to come to the club with me lol.
The next day maybe head to Red Rock Canyon or the Hoover Dam, or somewhere nearby for some ATV riding. Then maybe brunch. But not just any brunch, like a high energy, dancing, singing, mimosa sipping brunch where me or a friend is djing.
At some point we gotta check out the big clubs in Vegas, so maybe Drais, Jewel or Hakkassan.
Before she leaves we have to take a pic at my mural that’s downtown (yeah I actually have a mural, I didn’t paint it lol).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely! My family!
My DJ mentors DJ Thump and DJ So Hype.
My business mentor Robert Courtney.
My mentor and Godmom Ni’Cola Mitchell.
The city of Detroit where I was born and the city of Las Vegas where my DJ career, community and support system was created.
